Are lab diamonds the equivalent of handbag Superfakes?

To each their own, but I prefer natural diamonds. I wouldn’t say labs are fake though, but they’re not the same for many reasons, mostly: - scarcity, market value and prestige. These factors matter to me but I respect it it’s not important to all.

In addition, I think labs will continue to depreciate significantly as they become easier to manufacture. Meanwhile, though not all natural diamonds are “investments”, if you choose carefully (i.e. above a certain carat weight, colour, clarity etc or a particular brand) they will appreciate and personally, mine have. In terms of ethics, natural diamonds get a bad rep but as long as they follow the Kimberley process they are ethical. Plus you could always buy antique diamonds too. So overall I’m a natural diamond lover but again, do what you want and buy what you love!

I recently just purchased my first lab grown diamond piece and I would say that lab grown diamonds can not be compared to super fake designer pieces.
If I were asked what I was wearing I would say “diamonds” but if any further detail was asked I would say lab grown.
It would be similar if someone asked me about my wedding set; my wedding set is comprised of natural black diamonds. My husband did his research and requested natural black diamonds, not heat treated ones. So if someone asked about my wedding set, I would say “black diamonds”; and if they wanted more information, I would then say that they were natural and not heat treated.
I hope that makes sense!

I was somewhat taken aback when I had appraisals done for a few pieces of my jewelry last month. Majority of my pieces are from the art deco era and are mine cut stones. The appraisals were lower than appraisals from about ten years ago. I questioned snd was told lab diamonds are lowering value of natural diamonds. I still find that hard to believe.

End of the day, no one buys jewelry with resale value in mind. We buy jewelry because it's pretty and we like it. How anyone decides what they wish to pay for "pretty" is a personal and financial choice.

I have enough jewelry to open my own jewelry boutique. I have natural diamonds, natural rubies, natural stones of all colors. I also have lab-grown diamonds, other lab-grown stones, cubic zirconia, and Moissanite jewelry. I love them all with no distinction of whether they came out of the ground or a laboratory. No matter to me. If anyone were to ever ask, if [whatever] is "real" then they get the following reply: "Can you see it?" The person says, "Yes, of course." Then I say, "So then it's real." That's all any RUDE person who would ask that question deserves.

Yes, I walk a different path and proud of it.

Love that comeback statement!

I could see someone asking about black diamonds as they're unusual but beyond that, asking questions about whether someone's diamond was treated would be rude IMO

I am a widow who is considering selling my wedding jewelry. My e-ring and wedding ring are both yellow gold with natural diamonds. The appraised value for both rings is 2400.00. I’ve been warned not to expect anything like that if I sell. I got an offer from a pawn shop of less than 600.00.

I’m sending them to a company for an estimate but they have said jeweler appraisals tend to be inflated by 10-50x and that the retail price we paid has no bearing on the value of the stones. The company sent a diamond resale estimate. A natural 0.75 carat round diamond, about the size of my stone, is estimated to sell retail at about $3890.00. This is for I color and SI1 clarity. The resale value is estimated to be $472.00 with no certification and $900.00 with GIA certification.

My understanding is that lab diamonds are a better value for money. They sell for less but you pay less to buy them so you lose less money assuming as people said we’re talking ordinary settings etc. If I were buying now I’d buy lab. My late husband worked as a physicist at NASA Goddard for 32 years. He tested equipment in labs and supervised lab cleanliness and safety. He worked on the Mars Rovers and the James Webb Space Telescope. Because of this I have a sentimental attachment to lab diamonds.

As to why I’m thinking of selling, I have painful memories related to that jewelry. We had a great marriage but with there were things specifically about the jewelry that I’d rather not get into. I think everyone should get what they like.
Maybe trade it in on something that you love that doesn't have a painful association to it? You may get a better trade in value than a resale.

had insomnia early this morning and turned on QVC....they were selling lab grown diamonds...since they are huge in CZ's, this kinda cheapens the lab grown diamonds for me. they had them in various shapes and sizes. starting at 1 ct and the most expensive was $4200 for I think 3 ct...pendants

Then definitely sell or trade immediately and buy yourself something you love :)
