Are denim jackets for women supposed to button up?

Thanks for all your responses! I don't really want to button it up, I just think when I try it on and it won't button, well it must be too small. But the next size up is usually too large in the arms there's extra material on the back. I was wondering if they're meant to not close??? I bought a white GAP one this week, in L because the M won't do up, but the M was cuter looking. I guess it depends on what look you want. I would never buy a women's blazer that couldn't do up so I was applying that same logic to denim jackets.

Also- I would never buy one without trying it on first or from a store I could return incase it doesn't fit. So no eBay and the like...

Since @limom asked, here are some trends I've noticed, with some sales ones thrown in.

1. unfinished edges, hem, collar, etc.

5. some more traditional ones that caught my eye
R13 via shopbop - oversized is still a thing, but nice tapered waist (also will look good with any belt. also the "I accidentally mixed bleach" wash seems to be a trend too.

madewell via nord - 71 on sale. the copper toned buttons contrast nicely. other than that, can't get any more classic in terms of wash, but fitted

margiela via outnet - 80% off and has slits under the arms I believe.

helmut lang via outnet - 201, again, waist definition is key. and a bit more length for those who aren't into the cropped version that's also trending.

I can't wear blue denim on top and bottom. It's so matchy matchy. Reminds me of Jay Leno. :) I have 3 coming in the mail today from Amazon. 2 Levis, 1 Wrangler. I have no hope for any of them, but can't hurt to check them out. I think I need to wait another month or 2 when stores start to get more spring clothing. I love the fabric of the AG ones. So soft. But the fit is very slim. I'm semi slim but with a 36D chest so that creates problems. The search continues...

The Wrangler and Levis from Amazon in white are surprisingly super soft. Like an AG or Paige jacket. The Large is the right size in the body and shoulders. Comes in nicely at the waist. They're cute! I'm not an XL person. I don't own any clothes in XL. But I can't do these up either. I've come to the conclusion that they're meant not to be done up, ( I wouldn't do it anyways) and/or they're meant for smaller chested women because that's whats causing the problem. White denim jackets are hard to come by, I may keep these.

Update: Wrangler and GAP are being returned. Keeping Levis. If any of you want to try it (mine has silver buttons which I like a lot better with white, than the copper ones shown on the model)

The Levis jacket that op is referencing is probably meant to have an oversized fit. I wouldn't buy a jacket of any sort that doesn't close, I think that the fit you are looking for is definitely attainable.

I agree with Randr21’s suggestion as this jacket is fitted and the arms are more tapered. I have this set from helmut lang and I love it.

The cut of some denim jackets can be figure flattering and slimming even when buttoned. I had an dolce & gabbana denim jacket with leather back and sleeves. I purchased from the boutique around 1996 or so. It buttoned closed for maybe ten minutes. I got heavier, but I kept it bc I had matching pants. I figured that would someday find a tailor to alter to fit.

Post COVID, I finally lost some weight, and decided to alter. My third party professional tailor (also a skilled pattern cutter) also let out the sleeves. In the second pic, under my raised arm, you can see the seam of the additional material, but it’s hard to discern

ETA: the trend is now oversized, but I’m 54, and i wear what suits me  I didn’t go out with this jacket and the H leather mini, but I did pair it with looser cargo pants
