I normally fit a M in most denim jacket brands, but if I want the jacket to button up, I have to get a L which is always too big in the arms and shoulders. Are they supposed to just sit open with the left and right sides just meeting together in the front? Brand recommendations? I've tried, Gap, AG, Paige, Levis ( too boxy) Kut, Vince Camuto. Thanks!

I think they look better open. Every designer, big and small, has made denim jackets over the years. Look on ebay, search for "vintage denim jacket" and you'll find oodles and oodles. I used to have a Bill Blass one from the '90s that I loved. And a Gloria Vanderbilt, same vintage. Both I got for under $20. A few years ago I got one for $10 at Target. I cycle through them depending upon how I want to style them and whether I want to wear them as an outdoor or indoor jacket. I agree that the Levis ones are too bulky and boxy, although they're so iconic I feel like I have to have one in my closet.

There was an article many years ago about how models and celebrities purposefully buy their denim jackets too small to button up. after I read it, I could spot the larger gap, and the way it was styled always looked good. Having said that, I do sometimes fasten a single button on older boutique denim jackets or engage the zipper. . . But those (dolce and gabbana, Roberto cavalli, etro, and gucci) from many years ago are a few that I’ve owned that were usually contoured to the body. One of my favorite fitted denim jackets I bought at a tahari sample sale years ago. For older styles, or wFor body conscious denim brands like diesel (no idea if that brand still exists) try ebay NWT listings perhaps. For todays department store denim jackets, I have a feeling perhaps Lafayette 148 or Akris Punto, both of which frequently go on sale.

I've had multiple denim jackets over the years, including a premium denim brand. I never really liked the way they looked on me. Now I have a black hoodie one from Levi's. Denim with just the hood and cuffs being soft stretchy material. I think it makes me look smaller compared to a denim jacket. I wear it open. One day when it was cold I noticed it was hard to button - combination of the fit and the buttons just being sowed on very tight.
So my answer is open.

This is so funny that you say this about them buying small on purpose. I've always noticed they look so small, like there is no way they would be able to button them but I never realized that was the look they were going for. I don't mind my jackets fitted but on the occasion I do want to button a couple of buttons, I want it somewhat fitted but not so fitted I cannot button it. That would actually drive me crazy. LOL! BTW, I also notice this look with cropped leather moto jackets....way too small to zipper up.

Fashion writers at one time wrote that models ( European size 34 )also wore little boys and little girls clothes for that shrunken look.
This is why the sleeves were rolled at times on éditos.
Not a fan of this crap because this reinforced the idea that full grown women have to be the size of children albeit taller.
It is a gimmick to sell clothes and make women feel inadequate.
Moto jackets open?
Morre cray

Jean jackets sure are coming back in reimagined designs. Did a quick search and there are lots of interesting options, which means that designers have been including them purposefully as part of their collections. Some goodies on sale and some new ones to drool over. Time to bring out yours out or pick up a new one in a different cut. Very timely thread @Cinnamon718!

So innteresting reading everyone’s preferences!

First I look for a good fit in the shoulders then if necessary tailor to suit or live with the designers concept.

I have a couple of jean jackets that are over 50 years old. No idea they were that old until working it out just now. They are still going strong. The stitching has deteriorated in a few places and had to be redone. Jackets last way longer than jeans, they take a lot less stress at the joints.

Don’t wear mine right now but would never consider getting rid of them.

Jeans are another thing, they get patched but not worn out socially.

Since Covide people are dressing more comfortably. Lots of jeans but haven’t yet seen any jean jackets worn for casual business.

Having gone to design school with a degree in couture, it offends me when someone tries to sell me a jacket that won't close. Even if I never intend to wear a jacket buttoned, I want it to fit properly so that I can if I want to. I will not buy a jacket for appearance as distinguished from fit. I want both.
With that being said, the trend is to wear a jacket a little too small in order to show-off the torso. This is a matter of personal choice and depends on your comfort level.

the premium denim jean jacket I had - Rag & Bone - was more generously cut and I found it unflattering. eventually gave up a brought it to consignment shop
