THANKS, Claire! I would never have thought to go higher-rise with the pants..cannot wait to try it out! I think I may have to go clothes shopping, and get everything on your list. :graucho::laugh:

bibounette, I was always scared to try vintage, for fear the hips/bust would always be too small. Thanks for the anthropologie advice, I'll go look now.

A question for the women who have hourglass figures-

Do you find that the wrong fit can make you look heavier, a bit frumpy, even matronly? But the right fit can make you look quite thin? I find this especially true with dresses (refer to earlier post about fit issues).

hmm, i never heard of one, but i'd be curious. basically i've been able to do it on-sight, proportionality, etc.

A problem area for me? My very skinny arms...:hysteric: basically they're the same width from armpit to wrist with the widest part basically being my elbow--so when ppl say they're grossed out by models' arms...well i have those arms, lol. They are especially problematic when im trying to fill out short sleeved dress shirts that are supposed to be fitted...and i prefer covering up my shoulders and upper arms because of it. it's ridiculous, but i've rectified the situation a little bit with ribbed form fitting long sleeved shirts, and slim fitting dress shirts from H&M, Urban Outfitters, or Steven Alan. :yahoo:

for my apple friends :D

v-necks are a must, crew necks or boat necks can make us look like football players:p
Fitted tops, but NOT clingy, just not loose. Loose tops make us w/ big ta tas only look pregnant.
Boy cut jeans, curvy fit nips in too much at the waist for us, boy cut is more straight down - also good for skinny girls w/ muffin tops ;)
I don't really never wear sweaters, they add too much bulk where I am already bigger:tdown:
Reese Witherspoon is also an apple. My body is very similar to hers but w/ bigger ta tas :D

Need apple advice Can you give me examples of tops you wear (name brand or pics)? So is wearing baby doll type/ empire waist tops a no no? I thought those were o.k. to hide the stomach but I guess I would look prego. :confused1: I really want a different style of dressing. How much are stylist charging these days?

OMG yessss! Whenever I wear wrap dresses people are like "OMG you look great! Did you lose weight?" But if I put on something like a trapeze dress, I look like a pregnant elephant!

my extra weight definitely goes all over but more so in the butt/thigh region. lovely.

i would say i am curvy.

i don't have broad shoulders nor long legs.
and my ratio is higher than 0.8 so pear is out for me.

I think I am a pear, I'm 5'5 B 24inch waist and 36inch butt...I have a pretty long torso compared to my legs. My legs are not long and lean like you lucky apple girls (cameron diaz?), but the best that I can get it is tone and defined (like Jessica simpson legs).

The things that I like to do is to accentuate my waist and hips. I find that baby doll tops look okay on me as long as they're not too long. I wear ONLY boot cut and straight leg jeans, 7FAM is the perfect fit to me. The one main thing I stay clear away are the skinny jeans paired with flats combo, it makes me look thicker, shorter, and just plain wide.

Love reading all of the tips from the ladies here :flowers:

is there some ratio to figure out if you have long or short legs/torso?

Yes there is!! But damned if I can't remember it - it's something like your body is divided into "heads" (as a unit of measurement) and a proportioned body or long legs should be 4 head for the legs and 3 for the torso to the top of your head, whereas short legs are 3 heads for the legs and 4 heads for the torso to the top of your head.

It's something like that... I'll have a think and see if I can remember LOL... obviously, I need more "heads" in the brain area - it's a bit light on at the moment LOL

Hi fabgrabs! Sorry I never came back to this thread after asking you about your body shape - now that "my posts" has gone I'm a complete mess!

Crossover dresses are also great for hourglasses - the plunging neckline, adjustable waist (usually, they tie at the waist) and booty-skimming shape is supposedly ultra-flattering.

You could also try a flat front/pleated man-pant with those side pockets. Pair them with a lovely, crisp collared shirt (with vertical stripes) and hey presto! A lovely, masculine yet preppy look, perfect for hourglasses. Don't forget to leave a few buttons undone (tastefully of course ;)) to keep it feminine and sexy.

Somebody else said something about the right cut - hang on I'll find it...

Aaah yes - the wrap dress - this is what I meant by "crossover dress." Great look, great look!

This is the post I was talking about! The cut/fit is the most important thing when it comes to clothes! Well, that and the pattern LOL. This doesn't just apply to hourglasses, it applies to everyone. All the celebrities that you see have had their clothes especially fitted to fit their bodies: jeans, pants, shirts, dresses, everything! The wrong fit will make a supermdel look frumpy or awkward.

For big-boobied apples, you're better off finding a figure-skimming top, rather than an all-out empire line that completely conceals your middle. You're right, the effect is that pregnant look. Collared shirts, or anything you can tuck in but "pull out" a little bit is good. Also, have you seen those shirts/tops that tie around the waist but drape around the torso? They're great for concealing a pot belly, while not hugging your curves. I'll find a pic...
