Anyone on a low buy or no buy in 2023?

I am interested to know more. As you look at your things now, which ones feel easiest to let go? Which ones do you feel like keeping? Are there anyone your life that you are consider giving or gifting some items to? Please share more
I’m not the OP, but I’ve been doing the same thing (I am eyeing retirement in about six years). I’ve long been a purger, but I’m also a buyer, so am trying to be more mindful about purchases as I look to the next stage of my life. In terms of what I do with the items I purge, I find they wind up in a couple of different bins, if you will. I use a consignment store for clothing (Lilly Pulitzer, lululemon, Theory, Vince and other higher end labels). I donate brands my consignment store won’t take, plus clothing and shoes from DH and DD and household items, old tech, etc., to a coupe of favorite charities that pick up in my neighborhood. I’ve sold a number of fine jewelry pieces I no longer wear, or that were given to me by my mom when she was cleaning out after divorcing my dad (many were not my style); note this was for the gold, rather than for the stores to turn are and resell. Finally, I have a handful of friends and family who I’ve passed some pieces on to, items they’ve long admired, or that I believe are their style. My niece, who moved to our area, is just starting out, so she’s loving some of the work-appropriate items I’ve passed to her, like a Theory blazer, several Vince tanks and sweaters, and a Cole Haan wool winter coat. We’re close enough in size that my tops, jackets and outerwear work for her, and many accessories are size agnostic. She’s so thrilled to have the pieces and I’m thankful that someone I know is getting great use out of them! It somehow makes me feel better about purging them from my closet.

On topic for this thread, I attempted a low-buy year in 2023 and failed miserably. I did OK in January, but it quickly went downhill after that. So no more drastic declarations! Instead I want to be more mindful about what I purchase, making sure as best I can that items will be closer to forever pieces. We’ll see how that goes in 2024…

I’ve gifted many items to friends, but I’ve also started selling and consigning. During 2023, I made a conscious effort to use more of my things so that I could determine what worked and what I really enjoyed. After a year of that, I can say that 90 percent of the time I reached for one particular hand bag brand and mostly the same style but different colors. So I’ve gifted/sold/donated most of the other bags I own. Same with clothes although I’ve mainly donated the items I decided not to keep. I’m now working on jewelry. This is harder than I anticipated because of sentimental pieces.

I will also be going on a low-buy journey in 2024.

When I look across the different categories (clothes, shoes and accessories), I feel like everything is on my "no-buy" list, but have decided to keep the door open for another yellow gold everyday necklace of some kind.

We made a cross country move 2 years ago and did a major purge from 27 years in same home. It was a very freeing experience to donate so many things we didn’t use. Made a pact to not ‘colllect stuff’ again. It’s been great! Using money towards improvements on the home we are now in. The urge to ‘buy’ is gone. Part of that is being retired with a very quiet lifestyle. There are a couple of items I would ‘like’ to purchase someday if the right opportunity arises but I don’t have the urge and if it doesn’t happen I’m totally ok with it. Definitely not spending except on house this year.

Low Buy Rule for myself:
So, we are in the process of moving homes. As I pack, I realized that I have 30 pairs of shoes!!!! (including everything - sandals, sneakers, pumps etc).
Some of them have not been worn in 2 years because I rarely wear herls these days. Some of my sneakers are beautiful leather ones, but not very comfortable.
I wrote a rule for myself today that I cannot buy a new pair of shoes unless I donate, sell or give away 3 pairs in lieu.
I literally just run family errands or go to work. My social life is very casual which involves wearing sneakers or sandals. I can’t believe I accumulated 30 pairs!

30 is normal, just high heels alone I have over 50, plus over 5 pairs loafers, over 5 pairs winter boots, 3 pairs high heel boots, over 10 pairs of sneakers, 2 pairs knee high rain boots, 2 pairs driving flats, 2 pairs Ecco YUCATAN, 1 pair hiking boots etc. I love my shoes, even some I haven’t worn in a year, I just keep them especially when need to pair with certain clothing, sometimes only one pair matches perfectly.

I buys a lot less now but I will keep them, till I move or have to get rid of them

… So I am trying a dry January for shopping …
Me too! Mine includes no online browsing. In the 22 days I have learned I cruised around online shops out of distraction or boredom. Or something pops in my head and I pursue the rabbit hole. It’s not a surprise as I know this about me but admittedly I did shove it in the recesses of my psyche. It’s good that it is back out there.

I’m retired now and like others who have written live a casual life style.

When I allow myself to shop again, I will be on the hunt for some dressy shoes that aren’t high heels. At 57 I’d like comfort but I also want style

That’s truly the only ‘need’ I have in a closet of lovely clothes, shoes and bags.
