Anyone on a low buy or no buy in 2023?

Huge fan of having a plan/saving to purchase vs putting it on credit or layaway when they’re discretionary and not essentials.

At the same time, I love the idea of the luxury trip you have with friend. 1) it’s experience, bonding whatever you want to label. 2) discipline approach and I don’t know about you but I love my pieces more when I know hard earned $ went into it and the wait.

This year I’ve been pretty good at sticking with my budget, even with increase in wages, I splurged a bit, teeny bit, and most of it is in savings.

My next high buy will be another property.

Hopefully next year…
Thank you for your thoughts! Yes, our annual luxury shopping trip was a great experience and we are looking forward to our next one!
I highly recommend :)

I’m not planning a no-buy (I know I couldn’t do it) or even a low-buy, but I do want to have a lower-buy year. Over the last few years, I’ve gone way overboard with clothes and accessories. I have acquired some beautiful things, but most go unused or not used enough. I have several items from all categories that have not been used at all since I bought them.

I realize that as much as I may love something, it’s not necessarily applicable to my life. I do have a full life, so having a diverse large wardrobe is quite fun, but even with all I have going on, I don’t wear it all. And I want to! So I am trying a dry January for shopping and I’m committing to wearing what I own and finding new ways to style my existing items. Although we are only 5 days into the new year, I’ve worn only items that are several years old but in a new way than I’ve worn it in the past. I’m really enjoying it! I will incorporate my unworn items as well but I want to first appreciate that the old ones are still fabulous.

I’m also planning on letting some bags, shoes and clothes go. Because I have been lucky enough to get some fantastic things over the last few years, anything that isn’t so fantastic or incredibly useful can move on. I’m hoping that it will clear out some items so that I can better see my favorites.

Financially, I’m starting to think about college for my kids and my gosh that tuition! It’s irresponsible of me to buy yet another bag when my kids will need the money for their actual future. I’m not saying I won’t buy anything, but I do need to be mindful of what I have and what’s at stake.

Good luck to all on your more mindful journey!

ETA: Last year I did spend much more than any past years on experiences for me and my family and I do not plan that to cut that back. In fact, I’m willing to increase that spend as it was well worth it for all of us. But the “stuff” I buy will have to be sacrificed in exchange.

I am on a low buy. Like many others, I have so much more than I can ever use and my lifestyle is very simple and I am home almost all of the time. What do I need all these things for? Even more than that, what is the point in wanting these things? I caught myself saving up to buy a new Porsche this year. For what? I drive 3 miles to the gym and go to get a burrito out once a week. I won’t get any enjoyment out of that money beyond a few minutes here and there.

I think my displeasure comes from the fact I really dislike our house and the area in which we live for my husband’s job. Unfortunately filling a house you hate with beautiful things you can’t use because the area in which you live simply isn’t that fancy, isn’t that fulfilling at all. I will have to find new means of fulfillment this year and am devoting more time to my hobbies and traveling to get out of the area I dislike. Remains to be seen if it helps.

I’m on a low buy year. At the end of 2023, I retired and will have a very different lifestyle going forward. As others have said, I have more than I can ever use and enjoy and over the last few weeks I’ve begun to rehome a lot of things. To the point that I’m mortified about the amount I’ve accumulated. I don’t want continue to be surrounded by the clutter of unused items and certainly don’t want to add to that. For me, it causes anxiety and who needs that? Whatever I buy going forward will be carefully considered.

Love seeing everyone's responses. Last year I went 6 months without buying a bag and I was able to comfortably get into no buy/low buy habits. My list of things to not buy are the same as most people: bags, jewelry, perfume, etc. For 2024 I did order something I've been looking at and considering for a long time, but I want to go back to my habits for the last 6 months. Rather than talking myself out of purchases, I just haven't been tempted, and I don't want to ruin a good thing.

My goals for 2024 are to save/invest more money, focus more time and energy on things I care about more than shopping, and putting money towards new life priorities.

I'm planning to have a low-buy year for 2024. After getting married in 2023 me, and my wife are definitely in financial recovery mode. We just also have a lot of larger goals we want to accomplish. Like, I'm probably better with spending right now than I have been in the past, but I'm still not where I'd like to be. Plus at this point I have plenty of bags that I like and honestly I'm starting to run out of space. I don't feel like I can justify dropping $$$ on a bag when I have other things I want to invest in this year.

I am in the same boat as you. Last year, I spent the most than any past years on experiences for my family. We had a wonderful international trip and a few trips with my older parents. My older daugther is just getting to that age where she is curious about new places, exploring new cities and I am loving it. I am hoping this year will be the same and we get to make new memories

We live in a non-fancy suburb too! But I am trying to make an effort to wear my fancier things at least when we go out to a nice dinner, when visiting friends and even to work (within reason). I hope your efforts bring you success!

I am interested to know more. As you look at your things now, which ones feel easiest to let go? Which ones do you feel like keeping? Are there anyone your life that you are consider giving or gifting some items to? Please share more :)

Does anyone have reflections on how they did on their low buy/no buy in 2023?
Hi, I did much better in the second half of the year than the first. I also have gotten better at waiting for a ‘deal’ price rather than impulse buying. Also, I started wearing my existing jewelry and carrying my luxury bags a little more in 2023. Hopefully all of this continues into 2024
