I'm looking into putting a 1.25 round emerald into my original e-ring setting. It is a platinum ring with tapered baguettes on each side. What do you think of this idea? Does anyone have an emerald and diamond ring? Any pictures? TIA!

I'll bet that it would be stunning. Emeralds are a softer stone, but you have enough experience with jewelry to take care of it.
Have you thought about sapphire? It's going to be very popular with the upcoming royal wedding. :)

I briefly thought about sapphire as that is my birthstone. And I had the royal wedding on my mind too! I'm hearing that emeralds are often cloudy and it might be a challenge to find a good one. Do you think an emerald would be just as pretty and maybe even easier to find?

A good quality, strongly coloured and clear green non-heat treated stone with very few inclusions will be hard to find. I think if you can find one it will be worth it.

Green is the colour of love (that's why Taurus, ruled my Venus, has the emerald as it's birthstone). Wearing the goddess Venus' stone was thought to preserve love.

The cool-toned green colour will look great with white diamonds.

Excellent quality large sapphires are also not easy to find but easier than emeralds.

^ I agree. A nice emerald is going to be expensive. What about tsavorite garnet? It has amazing color and I see it as the green I'd like an emerald to be. It is a 7.5 on the Mohs scale, so not bad for durability either and reasonably priced too.

I love emeralds...they're my favorite gemstone. but I think they're too soft to be worn every day in an engagement ring. all emeralds have inclusions ("flaws")...that is the nature of the gemstone. a high quality emerald will not be cloudy, but it will have inclusions.

elizat's idea of a tsavorite garnet is a good one, & sapphires also come in green (which is 9 on the Mohs hardness scale...diamonds are 10).

i love emeralds. my mother has one, the typical square cut with two diamonds on the side. but she got it say 20 years ago? a good emerald is very htf and if you do, i say go for it. i prefer emeralds to diamonds anytime. i like tanzanite too.

Ok - getting some negative feedback on emeralds. What is a tsavorite garnet? Never heard of it and not sure if spelling is correct. Is that a red color? Which do you like more - the garnet or sapphire? I really want a new ring - LOL!

Tsavorite is a very beautiful green stone. Do a quick search on Tiffany's site and you will see a few pieces. It can be very expensive, but not as expensive as a high quality emerald.

My favorite color is green so I would lean more to the tsavorite, but I have been jonesing for a pink or ceylon blue sapphire lately. I'm supposed to be taming my jewelry coveting, but I'm like a dragon. More, more more!

habanerita that ring is TDF!

tsavorite garnet is so named because it's mined in the tsavo national park in kenya. it's a bright green, but the crystals generally do not form in larger sizes. I think you'd have a very hard time finding anything larger than 1ct, & even 1ct would be a challenge to find. http://www.gemselect.com/other-info/about-tsavorite.php

green sapphires are a different shade of green. they are not as readily available as blue or other colors, but I think that's largely due to demand. you need to contact your local jeweler to see what you can find. here are some green sapphire images from google: http://www.google.com/images?q=gree...de_link&ct=mode&ved=0CCIQ_AU&biw=1024&bih=653
