I've always soaked mine in Dawn dishwashing and use a soft toothbrush.

A friend suggested that Dawn dishwashing that foams (can't think of what it's called) so I tried that and WOW -- it is amazing!

i tried this the other night! i ran out of jewelry cleaner and my rings had gotten covered in tartar sauce at work earlier in the day (tartar sauce = evil). it worked so well! thanks for the tip!

A jeweler suggested one part Mr. Clean to four parts water. Soak for a few minutes then clean gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush. I've done this many times with all kinds of jewelry with great results. Plus, I do have my rings professionally done once a year.

I polish my diamonds all the time. I take my wedding ring in to the jeweler mostly. BUT if Im in a hurry...baby toothbrush and a bit of toothpaste! Makes it sparkle like crazy. If I have more time I actually hace a steamer so I use that. (xmas present last year!)
Or good old jewelry cleaner that I bought from my jeweler.

I can't remember for the life of me why, but when I told my jeweler I use toothpaste, she told me not to - Maybe it dulls the metal?? I am going to see her on Tuesday - I will ask her again about that...

A quick and easy way to clean tarnished silver jewelry is to rub it with baking soda (dry), then rinse with warm water and dry. It is super easy and works great!

Easy Off Bam Multi use takes everything off of all of my gold and silver. It gets even nasty dirt in tight crevices out. I just put the pieces in a plastic container, spray some in and let it sit for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water. Just don't use it on pearls or opals-toothpaste is great for pearls and just a damp cloth for opals and I use a silver polish cloth for the metal (gold or silver) around them.

I usually just use jewelry cleaner. Some occassions I use dawn that works great. Dawn does the trick for about anything! Anyone have any advice for fashion jewelry??? I spend ALOT of money on fashion jewelry and was wondering if there is anyone of cleaning them without taking the plating off??

I use my Sharper Image Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner w/the solution it came with.

A "recipe" you can use to clean your gold/platinum/diamond pieces is

Equal parts hot water & ammonia
a drop of dishwashing detergent
a spritz or two of Mr. Clean (Optional)

Let jewelry sit in the solution for a few minutes, you can use a very soft toothbrush to clean the pieces. Rinse them off, dry them with a lint free cloth
Use canned air or blow dryer on cool setting (Good distance away from jewlery) to fully dry & avoid water marks.

i soak mine in liquid dishwashing solution and with a few drops of vinegar added to it. that gives good results.
or, at times i put them to soak with som unused perfume, in a closed airtight container, that also worked.

@ liz: i never tried with contact solution, i got half a bottle at home, i'll try it very soon! thanks for the tips!
