The pictures of Dita von Teese on this thread inspired me to do my own 40's half moon nails :smile1: I wanted to try the traditional style with no second color in the half moon, just bare so that new growth at the cuticle would never be apparent.

I used Cult Nails Blackout and used a pointed Q-tip to make the half moon bare, then sealed it with topcoat. I need a bit of practice to improve my technique and make the half moon sharper. Maybe next time I will use a striping brush and do it freehand.

Thanks ladies! I did get a few nice comments about this mani today :smile1:

I think it depends on the shape and size of your nail bed, but I think as long as your nail beds are longer than they are wide, and don't flare out, you can grow and file them to ovals. Once my nails are the desired length, I just file away at the sides to taper them into a soft point. You can also strategically paint them to give an illusion of longer, more oval nails (ie leave gaps on the sides of your nails depending on the shape you want to achieve). If you do end up trying it, please post pics!

All things nail polish-y is a new obsession for me. In my many searches of colors, nail art, etc. it seemed that oval-shaped nails were only to be found on the "Okie from Muskogee" and possibly the "Country Mouse". If you were a true nail aficionado you had square nails. But...

I like oval nails, always have, and it's nice to know that there are others like me out there. -"Hi, Others!"

I took this quiz http://www.nicolebyopi.com/life-in-lacquer/best-shape-you and it gave me Square! Ew!

Here's my most recent mani. This is pretty much my ideal length (about a week's growth after being cut down to the quick) and shape. I would love for them to be even more almond-shaped but that means I have to grow the nails longer and I only like having short free edges.

You can see from the third picture that I like to make the curve up on the free edge match the curve up on my cuticles.

EDIT: I thought I should add an older picture of my natural nails to show why I prefer the oval shape. They naturally are very rounded and curved so you can understand when I do them square or squoval there is way too much extra nail on the two corners which feels weird. Also this is usually the longest I ever leave my free edge while still feeling comfortable typing and working, so I don't have to worry about nail strength/integrity.

Such incredible nails! You have fabulous nail-genes. ( ^-^)

I always had rounded/oval nails until I developed Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and hypothyrodism. Now my fingers are chunkier and my nails peel (why I switched to gel a couple years ago), and a squoval shape is the most flattering (and practical).

I wish I could achieve a more almond shape. I absolutely adore the look. My nail beds are too long though, that if I grow out the free edge enough to file into a more balance almond, they'd be too long to be practical. I stumbled upon this picture and it's literally my ideal shape
