Am i the only one slightly tired of the obsession of elegant bags ?

Actually, a beat up birkin or Kelly can be very rocker chic. But usually in a larger size so it doesn’t look precious or girly. And usually in box or another smooth leather. Jane birkin and Kate Moss carried them this way. And, one of my style inspirations was this TPF pic from the mid aughts

I don’t like “beat up” anything. It looks like the owner doesn’t care for themselves or their belongings. Making it a beat up Kelly gets no more “points” IMO than someone else having a beat up bag from Wal Mart.

Not sure why when one posts a link to a particular post in a thread , it now opens up to the first post in that thread (in this case the Olsen twins). I don’t know anyone who likes that (Olsen) look.

In my actual post , when I refer to ‘beat up,’ I was simply referring to the particular screenshot in post #42, which is of a bag that is enjoyed. :) My screenshot is meant to illustrate a bag that isn’t overly elegant as per this topic. IMO only that can include overly pristine and obsessive concern with every stitch or super expensive classics that look like museum pieces .

I’m somewhat OG, and I grew up with the notion that bags were cherished that showed some wear/use (whether they were Hermes or Walmart). When I was growing up, plenty of uber wealthy individuals simply carried a well worn bag from LL bean, indicating utility rather than brand new purchases indicative of excessive consumption. It’s a different aesthetic than what is currently popular on TPF :)

I absolutely agree with you on this point and will take it further. I think that in buying high quality bags, they should actually be used over years or even decades without regards to trends vs left to linger on a shelf or swapped out just because fashion goes a different direction. That’s how one develops their own style.

My comment was just that all items should be cared for as opposed to being allowed to look trashy as the Olsen twins allow.

Jane Birkin's battered Birkins were the ultimate in bag cool. But it was because they had soul, they looked like they had seen life with their stickers and beads and signs of wear.

The Olsens' bags look like they had been simply abused and poorly cared for, if not intentionally ripped and battered to make them look fashionable for the moment. When you see someone carrying a bag in that poor of condition you think Egads! Yuck! Get some leather conditioner! Or put that poor thing out of its misery. There is nothing soulful about such a badly cared-for bag.

Ya…. Patina is one thing but when the leather / bag would look 100% better after some leather care products it just looks like the handbag equivalent of someone wearing scuffed and unpolished shoes. :nono:

From your bags collection, it appears to me that you have more of a refined ,lady like style.
It seems those who prefer a more beat up esthetic have more a 90/punk style.
No wrong choice, Imo.
I would not purchase an artificially worn in bag but if it is natural, I appreciate the relaxed look.
What are your thoughts?

Jane had a very lived in look and appeared homeless at times. She just exuded confidence and was infinitely charming. So it worked for her, imo.
the Olsen’s dedication to their looks is admirable.
It is them. The row is very successful, so it must work at some degree.

Ironic considering classic menswear is usually the option one reaches for when avoiding trends. 🤣

My comment has nothing to do with style because any style can have quality items that are cared for (even when well worn and well loved).

What I don’t ever think looks good is wearing raggedy, torn, scuffed items that show no care has been taken with them. That isn’t a rocker style, that’s being unkempt and careless.

Personally, I’m sick to death of aspirations to being “old money.” That being said, having high quality, long wearing, forever beautiful items is certainly my preference. I don’t like disposable fashion for a hundred reasons and would love for everything I own to last for decades.
Whatever happened to quiet luxury?
I hope the trend dies. It’s created an army of bland copycat looks. Plus, I never understand why anyone aspires to look like something they’re not. If you’re “old money” great. Revel in your style. If you identify as some other socioeconomic group, live that fully.

I like color and creative expression. Beige and plain will never work for me.

💯:)

Eek, this won’t be popular but I think casual clothes (jeans and tees) with a Chanel flap and Cartier only work with “non-disheveled” women. Meaning generally fit, with well fitting clothes, and styled hair. I see women in target looking pretty rough but they threw on a Lou Lou and …. It doesn’t save them. It’s like they want the bag to do all the work.

In post #42, here,
Regarding your photo of the Ashley twins, I would much prefer they had exchanged their Kelly bags as I think it would have made their looks perfect.
Simple, simply swap bags.

That would imply actually 'dressing up' for a bag- fitted clothes and styled hair for a target run.
It's just simply wearing a nice quality bag one already owns, no need to transfer items into something else just because one is not styled at that moment.

Young and gorgeous helps too lol :)
