I'm an equal opportunity gem lover. I'd love to have one of everything. That said, however, we wanted something dramatically different for my e-ring so we choose an nearly 8 ct cushion cut blue sapphire, non heat treated from a very desirable mine. It is actually very rare in terms of comparing it to many of the diamonds you see. I love the blue- it's a mesmerizing shade like the ocean. it looks different in different light and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's rare to get stones with the right color saturation and cut to show off their stuff... which makes them so very unique. I get a lot of compliments usually. Of course that doesn't mean I don't love diamonds for different reasons!!
Of course I do also get the oddball comment, like blank stare- that's all he got you, what he couldn't afford a diamond... LOl terrible. (my stone was more than a well sized diamond, say 2cts+) But most people only know of the man made blackish stones they see in the mall. There's a whole world of gemstones beyond those. Kinda of like comparing CZ to a diamond really.
In fact natural alexandrite is certainly more per carat than diamonds, if you can even find a natural. Nearly all of it on the market today is man made.....
