I love coloured stones more than diamonds, and have chosen an unusual engagement ring to replace the traditional one I had that went down the plughole. check it out if you want (its under the thread of quirky engagement rings). at the end of the day, if you like something, dont let anyone tell you that you are wrong, it wouldnt do for us all to be the same!!xxx

I LOVE precious (and semi precious) gemstones but i LOVE LOVE LOVE diamonds. It wasnt until i got engaged did the real obsession start. Diamonds are the only things that i can just stare at and kind of 'fall' into ... love love love.

^^ Is it because they match everything? Also because of their beautiful spectrum of colors? Hmm, maybe I might like diamonds later on in life.

i can only say for me it is not about matching etc it is about their unique sparkle that sucks you in that is what i like diamond for (even better when colored then you have abundence of sparkle plus color)
but even with white diamonds it is their sparkle and their inner life that catches me just like i adore staring into the jardin of a fine emrals or watching the light play on a star ruby the intensity of fine iranian turqoise and to extand that the shimmer and luster of pearls the flames on conchs the surface and feeling and shades of coral and so on

each "stone" has its unique characteristics and i happen to love many of them for their allure and the knowledge that some are millions of years old and a wonder of nature

just choose the ones you love best those that speak to you! no need to love diamond as there is no need to love tigereye kwim? if you love quarry best by all means wear it and enjoy it. never let others influence you

I'm an equal opportunity gem lover. I'd love to have one of everything. That said, however, we wanted something dramatically different for my e-ring so we choose an nearly 8 ct cushion cut blue sapphire, non heat treated from a very desirable mine. It is actually very rare in terms of comparing it to many of the diamonds you see. I love the blue- it's a mesmerizing shade like the ocean. it looks different in different light and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's rare to get stones with the right color saturation and cut to show off their stuff... which makes them so very unique. I get a lot of compliments usually. Of course that doesn't mean I don't love diamonds for different reasons!!

Of course I do also get the oddball comment, like blank stare- that's all he got you, what he couldn't afford a diamond... LOl terrible. (my stone was more than a well sized diamond, say 2cts+) But most people only know of the man made blackish stones they see in the mall. There's a whole world of gemstones beyond those. Kinda of like comparing CZ to a diamond really.

In fact natural alexandrite is certainly more per carat than diamonds, if you can even find a natural. Nearly all of it on the market today is man made.....

I love all sorts of stones. I love white diamonds when they're cut right. They're certainly not my favorite, though. I can't even pick a favorite, to be honest. I just love gorgeous stones, be it a pigeon blood red Burmese ruby or a gorgeous Oregon sunstone with tons of schiller or a deep, dark Zambian amethyst (esp a cab cut!)

I love so many...

^^ I know, you have a wonderful collection and I bet your shop has even more beautiful things. I love to have that type of job. Gosh, I don't know how I would even sell, because it would be hard to part with some many beautiful jewelry.

really? I'm curious, what about pearls do you dislike? Is it the care or the "old lady factor?" LOL!:smile1:
A combination of those two factors and that to me they just don't look good or particularly "fancy"...I feel like they just look like cheap little white beads or something. Not a good reason but they have always made me cringe.

Now...on OTHER people they can look great, but on me...I am not that classy or classic ;)

GnomeNisse- I have to know, how do you decide what you keep and what you sell? If you are around such pretty things all day, does it make it hard to part with many items? Or, do you buy things that you don't necessarily like so that way it won't be hard to keep? LOL!
