Alhambra earring weight

One pair is WG Pave (9g), the other is YG mirror-polished (8g). The weights are from the Korea VCA website. I think WG tends to be heavier than YG. The WG Guilloche Vintage Alhambra are 10g and the YG Guilloche are 9g, also according to the Korea VCA site.
Do you find that weight difference discernible to you while wearing - pave WG vs mirror YG?

I have experienced issues with my Alhambra earrings—both all metal and with stones—as well as my Perlee Clover Hoop earrings. I spoke with my SA about whether it was weight or the thickness of the posts. She also suggested they may need to have the clip pressure loosened. I am taking these earrings into the boutique this week and will let you know what I learn. Of note, my Frivole earrings (small model) do not give me the same problems. Thanks to @waterlily112 I know from the Korea website that the Frivole earrings are roughly the same weight as the Alhambra earrings.
I was incorrectly told by an SA, not my usual SA, that only the post location could be changed. @BigAkoya has several posts in the VCA thread about the multiple options including post length/thickness, tension, etc to make them more comfortable. My usual SA confirmed this and did some of these things and the earrings are definitely more comfortable but still heavy for me so I think that 10 g is my no go zone of earring weight. I have made an appointment to try on the YG MOP since they are only 7 g and the sweet MOP even though they are considerably smaller. I am still holding out for the pave since they are 1 g a piece lighter and I have a TE and onyx necklace that I would like similarly shaped earrings to match and that won't get lost in my black hair. Magics are all heavier than the Guilloche. I am also trying on the pave frivoles as well. He said that his customers, like you, have found them more comfortable than the similarly sized Alhambra line.

No, not really. I wondered what one gram really means—it is equivalent to .03 ounces. I live in the USA so I compute ounces better!
Me too! It's hard to imagine "weight" on ears as some ear piercings (like mine) are super sensitive. We also think of ounces mostly in liquid term, as in 8 ounces of milk. I definitely could not wear a cup of milk on my ears!

Hence, I like to think of it in percentages relative to the heavier earring.
10g vs 7g... the 7g earring is 30% lighter than the 10g earring. That's a big difference to me.

Maybe thinking of it this way will help visualize the weight better.... the earrings weighs 30% less... like a feather!:heart:

If the earrings are comfortable but heavy have you tried Lobe Wonder? I read about them on TPF and ordered them on Amazon. I have small earlobes and they help my heavier earrings—such as the Perlee Clover Hoops (15g) and mini RDN (15g) —sit better on my earlobes and offset some of the weight. (I ran into trouble with my Perlee Clover Hoops when I wore them 3 days in a row without Lobe Wonder. Ouch.) My Alhambra earrings pinch immediately if I wear them with Lobe Wonders, which makes me think clip pressure is my issue. FYI - the instructions call for putting them on your earlobe first and then putting on the earring. I have found it easier to pierce the Lobe Wonder with the earring post if I put the post through my lobe first and then push it through the Lobe Wonder. Sticking it the back of my earlobe is easy from there.

What a great way to think about it, @BigAkoya. I bake a fair amount and use a scale to measure some of my ingredients (it is more accurate that cups/tablespoons/etc.) Maybe that’s why I see .03 ounces a bit differently. The percentages you suggest are better, though.

I think it may be clip pressure. VCA's standard tightness for earrings is too tight for me. I always have to have them loosened to 3.5mm. I have never been able to wear any of their earrings as-is. It's always loosen the tension and replace with thinner posts for me. I also always check to be sure the post is at the bottom hole (to make the earring sit higher).

If your ear piercing hurts, it's definitely too tight, and you can ask to loosen the tension. If your ear piercing bleeds, the post is too thick, and you can swap out with thinner post.

You certainly do see .03 ounces differently as I don't see it at all! You're a pro for sure.

Speaking of baking...
OMG... since you're a baker, search for the Tom Cruise Coconut cake (it's actually a white chocolate coconut bundt cake). I just read about it and think I need to try it. You could probably bake one in 10 minutes.

Back on topic...
I have small ear lobes too, on top of a small ear piercing. For your Alhambra earrings, check to see if the post is in the bottom hole. That's the standard hole, but sometimes, a new earring may have the post in the top hole. Having the post in the bottom hole makes the earring sit higher on the ear lobe.

Thank you! I didn’t know this. I will raise it with my SA.

Haha! I actually thought of this in percentages as well. 1 g shaved off each earring was a 20% decrease in weight and 1.5 g was 30%. But I think ultimately that I need to just try them in person and consider how they feel and not be blinded by how pretty they look. ;)

I am going to give these a try and I have a friend that may need these as well. Thank you!

I have the same issue; I think the frivole does not cause the same discomfort because only part of the earring is pressing into the lobe, while the Alhambra is a big, flat clover-shaped disc pressing into basically all of of the lobe. Frivoles are so comfortable for me, while Alhambra are tolerable when adjusted well. I do have one lobe that is a little thicker than the other and very sensitive skin, and that is the ear that will start throbbing and bleed sometimes. If I adjust the tension loose enough that it never causes pain, then it tips forward on my ear. Another challenge with the Alhambra is that the surface area pressing on the ear spans both slightly thicker and slightly thinner pieces of flesh, while the frivole is only pressing on one point, so it is easier to adjust the tension perfectly.

What you say about the geometry of the Alhambra makes sense. I have also had difficulty with my Perlee Clover Hoops and think that may be because of the weight of the earring. Plus, I have very small earlobes. I am having the tension loosened on my Alhambra and Perlee Clover Hoop earrings. If they tip forward—as I suspect they will—I have Lobe Wonders and hope they will help.
