I was going to punch holes through vachetta tabs and canvas on either side and add screw-back D-rings but do you think it would cause more strain and damage than attaching strap to metal of handles? No it's not worth it...I had my first speedy in the mid-eighties. At that time alot of people used the Mono long strap with no support on the sides of the bag. Mine began to split the canvas where the strap hooks to the bag. Of course LV wouldn't touch it as they won't fix canvas...I even took it to a leather/shoe repair shop...And they said it couldn't be fixed. I now have the Speedy Bs in all prints...Lesson learned

I wouldn't do that. If you think about the engineering of a bag with a bandoulière strap -- and you can look at the Speedy B but really any bag with a strap --, you'll notice the weight is distributed along the entire bag -- by which I mean the strap isn't attached at a single point (which _will_ rip!) but rather to a piece of leather that extends the full height the bag.
I actually did add drings to mine it works perfectly. Mine is a preloved speedy 35… used it for work and now using it for gym… I added guitar straps from Etsy and it looks fab! I went to a good Cobbler and had him put it in… I just tighten the screws from time to time as it has come

I didnt add D ring on mine , just O ring that has extra loop so the handle from the strap stands freely instead rubbing off the O ring and original handle from the bag . I did the same also when I use my Speedy 25 .. Not sure though it answer ur question though
Sure, here are some pics. My drings are added to the side so there is no danger of pulling on the leather and the weight is evenly distributed.

I purchased an LV strap for my classic Speedy 30 and have been hesitant to use it because some say the straps could be damaged. I just found this solution when searching for O rings on Amazon.... I had to share. I'm going to try it! You put the O ring inside the handle with the original hardware. The it will carry like my Alma BB.

I’ve been using a strap on my old azur speedy 25 since I bought it in 2007 and no issues.
That's great! While measuring just now, I noticed a little damage! I've only used the strap a couple times (and only while I've needed my hands free). I can't believe there is damage already! Wowza. I'm in denial that I could have even done this.
