This is why I find the kids irresponsible. If you hate the old man so much and cut ties with him, don't fight for his money. If you want your old man's money, be nice (while he was alive). Plan a funeral. Do it for the public, at least that would look nice in the legal battle to the judge.
Yes - this is so insightful.
And as far as kids declining inheritances from estranged parents, FTLOG take the money and donate it to animal rescue or other worthy causes.

It sounds like she was agoraphobic or had some mental illness. It’s so crummy that they’re showing the inside of the house, he would have hated that.
It sounds like she had a hoarding/shopping addiction. She was seen out so no agoraphobia, imo.
It is somehow exploitative but otoh it is also educational.
You can’t do it all yourself.

100%.

There's no shame to ask for help when a situation becomes overwhelming. I think most people are happy and grateful to be given the chance to assist when someone else is struggling.

Life is so hard these days that eve if someone just asks if you're ok can mean a lot.

It seems like things were fine for many years (decades) and then they weren’t. I wonder if Gene handled the business end of things for most of their marriage, like hiring people to take care of the property, etc. Then as his disease progressed over the past few years, he was no longer able and she was overwhelmed. I keep going back to her not calling to check on her own mother with dementia since October when she had always called before. It is a real possibility that she struggled with her own mental illness. She was well enough to handle many other things though, so I’m not sure.

I was upset to see the house looking like that and I felt that footage should not have been aired. Allow them their dignity in death for goodness sake.
I felt the same way. It was an enormous invasion of their privacy. The press did it purely for shock value IMO and to give the rubes in their comments sections an opportunity to give their judgmental, useless opinions.

Not for the first time I am grateful I am not famous. Who wants to have to worry about whether your house is a mess when you die?

I think that caring about a mess is probably not a high priority for the dead.

I suspect many more people die of hantavirus than the official numbers report. Its symptoms present as chest congestion and fever like the flu. Unless someone goes to an ER with some pretty dramatic pulmonary symptoms they won't be tested for hantavirus.

A few years back someone who was working as a house cleaner on the A&E show "Hoarders" died of hantavirus after cleaning a hoarded house. I think it was in NM. Prior to that A&E had faced a lot of criticism for not giving masks and respirators to cleaners on the show. I don't know if they changed their policy.

Hantavirus is extremely contagious. The virus is transmitted via air from urine and droppings from deer mice. When cleaning up after deer mice one needs to wear a respirator. An N95 mask won't block the virus.

There have been deaths from hantavirus in every state, including in the northern Midwest, though the virus is more prevalent in the SW. It's not as "rare" as the media has been reporting.

Hoarding and stopping taking care of yourself and your space is indicative of mental illness. I unfortunately speak from experience with close loved ones.
I agree, this should not have been released, so sad. :(
I think that Betsy became overwhelmed., as she cared for him and a large property on her own.
I agree with you that she most likely had some type of difficulties.
From the reports, public spaces were maintained, the areas that were problematic were her bathroom and other buildings.
At the end, it was an unfortunate succession of events.
As far as reporting the facts, he was a public person and therefore had very little expectation of privacy, imo.
It is not scandalous and actually could help someone who is in the same position as Betsy.
