I'm in my mid-20s and Hollister (close enough to A&F) jeans are the only ones that fit me. The same can be said for their button-down dress shirts. Those are about the only two items I buy from there though.

For their branded items, self-conscious and cares a lot about fitting in. I would almost say superficial, airheaded mall rat because that is the typical image, but I know a nice kid who wears only Abercrombie. In the end you will project your own image based on how you put yourself together and your own personality. But most American girls who read ABERCROMBIE are, um, not widely admired.

I have a few items that don't have any logo. I don't think there's any particular perception there.

Luckily the stuff I bought I only really intended to wear around the house to chill out in. Im early 30's and think Im past wearing big logos out and about! So i guess from that point its all ok. But IM really suprised about the negative views about it but I can see why too.

I think because we have only just got it over here in the UK its maybe more sought after. I found the prices VERY CHEAP in the states!

oh gosh! This is not good news!!! Hmm, anyone in the UK have any opinions on how its viewed over here?

Actually I don't think the UK has a much better perception of A&F, especially after what happened to the poor ex-salesgirl with the prosthetic arm who they discriminated against

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/8200140.stm

I know a lot of people in London who pretty much boycotted A&F after that and it proved to be very bad publicity for the company. I personally am not a fan and the one time I visited the Savile Row location, I got the impression it was filled with pre-pubescent tourists wanting to take pictures with the half-naked men in the entrance. I also grew up in Asia where A&F and Hollister factory stock was readily available (most of the stuff is made there very cheaply), so I definitely don't think the pricing reflects the poor quality.

Apparently, A&F had been sued as a racially biased company a few years ago for not hiring women and men of color (any color). I have not been a fan. I get the impression that it's an overrated and overhyped company targeted at teens.

Don't forget they also sold some very racially charged shirts before too.

I think in the US anything that says A&F is more for age 12-22. Many people are not aware of the controversial aspect of A&F. I will say so much depends on where you are. In the town where I went to college the A&F has a diverse staff. They would have a lot of trouble with students if they tried any shady hiring practices.

I remember when A&F was less fashionable and more of an Eddie Bauer type store. Back when I was in high school, A&F was just beginning to get really popular and mainstream. I asked my youngest sister (there's quite an age gap between us) if A&F was still the "cool" thing to wear and she said only the junior high kids think it's cool nowadays. Made me feel old :p

That's interesting. Even if factory stock is readily available, my friend from Hong Kong is obsessed with buying A&F here in the U.S. Her friends back home or from abroad often ask her to pick up merchandise for them as well. She says her uncle works for the Hollister division & has given her "defects" before, but she doesn't care for them. Also as I mentioned earlier, Japanese tourists go crazy for A&F in Hawaii.

Also, OP (Handbag_Whore), judging by your previous topics, can I ask why you care about perception so much?

I'm from Europe and I can tell you that everyone here is absolutely crazy about Abercrombie - not just teenagers, even college students and parents. People love it. I see Abercrombie everywhere.

I have some of their stuff, like jeans and a few cardigans, because I think they're cute and the fit of their jeans is amazing, I don't care about logo t-shirts though. I hate shopping there, the store is always crowded and sometimes you have to wait in line to get in there. Oh and did I mention that the salespeople are absolutely not helpful?

U.S. perception: either you're on the richer side and pay for the quality items (coats, cashmere, etc the bigger items) (this is okayish).. OR you're very, very late on the realization that it's lame to "look good" in your A&F/HCO graphic tee.

INTL perception: it looks very cool, very American to wear the brand...

Im not sure I get your comment Vinyl but I dont care what people think but I am interested in what people think.

I think the fact everyone has such varying opinions on any one brand is what makes fashion so interesting - as the song goes, if everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at eachother!!:smile1:

ive been wearing A&F/Hollister/UO/AE since i was in middle school AND PROBABLY ALWAYS WILL! I think the clothing is cute and durable and still have some of my clothes from back then, i was in that store so much until they asked to hire me, of course i said no tho.:D

Ah, I see! I was confused because you seemed to freak out after a bunch of negative opinions of the brand were posted. If you really like A&F, you should feel free to wear it outside of your house, not just lounging around.
