I haven't had any unlucky handbags - but I've had unlucky jewelry.
A white gold and diamond flip flop pendant: always had a financial reversal when wearing it; the markets ALWAYS dropped when I wore it, I usually lost expensive items and bills came in higher than expected.
On the other hand, I also have a few pieces of lucky jewelry: a pair of mesh earrings which, when I wore them, I always receive the phone calls I have been waiting for.
I don't like to think I'm superstitious; I hate the idea of it, even. But I'll admit that I do tend to "purify" jewelry when I buy it these days (clean it in distilled water, smudge it with sage, and then allow sunlight and moonlight to flow through it for 72 hours).
Even that didn't help the flip flop though; I eventually melted it.
Handbags no. Hair? Yes, most definitely![]()
I was in a car accident a few weeks ago. Truck ran a red light as I was turning. My car was totaled. Now I'm too scared to carry the bag I had that day. Luckily it was just my "errands" bag but still, I love that bag.
in my culture, flip flops and shoes are considered bad luck because in the chinese language and dialects, the word for shoes/slippers/flipflops sounds like the word for bad luck and unlucky
Great perspective & advice [emoji4] thank you [emoji5]Or, you could feel lucky that while your car is toast, you are OK? Sometimes it's a matter of perspective.
I say, keep wearing the bag. If something else goes wrong while wearing it, then the bag is definitely unlucky!
How interesting!
Please share the words for both slippers & bad luck, if don't mind.
So, does your culture avoid wearing zori/flip flop/etc.?
Or simply avoid saying the name, to avoid bad luck?
I bought a bag when I was in my first trimester of pregnancy with my son. I was so sick with morning sickness that after that passed, I couldn't bring myself to carry that bag because it reminded me of being nauseous. I realize it sounds silly but it took about 2 years to get over the physical reaction every time I saw the bag. I did get over it and eventually sold her but man it was a strong response.

Thank you very much for explaining. ♡It's been a long time since I've written in Chinese so any mistakes someone please point out, thanks
靴 boots "xue"
鞋 shoes "xie"
拖鞋 slippers aka flip flops "tuo xie"
All sound like xie which is dialect pronunciation of bad luck/unlucky ( the characters are the same but different pronunciation, written it's the same). In hainanese dialect it sounds exactly like "xie".
Boots sounds a bit more like hokkien pronunciation of bad luck.
I love my flip flops and where I am from, almost all of us are in flip flops but I won't go for a shoe, flip flop or heel birthday cake, ornament and accessories or giving shoes and shoe shaped things as gifts.
kids these days don't care but I'm not young anymore [emoji33]
No problems with saying the words either , we say it all the time haha
