The original poster was asking if a 40 barenia birkin can be carried on a plane without having to stow it in front of you or in the overhead compartment. Having travelled with this exact bag, I was merely answering her question. I really fail to see how reiterating common airline rules can possibly be perceived of as aggressive.

With the airlines tightening all rules governing every aspect of air travel, adhering to the rules is a must. On my last flight, the man in front of me was about to escorted off the aircraft for his refusal to place his too large tote-like bag in the overhead bin. The flight attendant told him that since it could not fit under the seat in front of him, it could not stay upright in front of him. The man's wife sensed that things were not going well when 2 other flight crew including the male attendant showed up in support. She started crying and finally the man backed down.

Mistikat was merely reporting the facts. If that is construed as passive aggressive, then I am truly puzzled.

The only thing that I am finding passive aggressive is posting/writing that is consistently misspelled and lacking punctuation. Typos are one thing, but making something difficult to read and understand is another and illustrates a lack of common courtesy.

Thanks, guys. Please let's not get into a dust-up. From my own experiences traveling, I would not risk trying to put anything behind my legs, as I've seen some flight attendants get pretty serious on people who tried. (But, Birkel, did you mean that you put your bag *under* the seat *behind* you? That would be storage space for the person behind you--maybe they did not have any bags to stow at their seat?). Anyway, I have seen flight attendants who didn't even bother checking for bags in wrong places, and some who considered themselves carry-on police. These days, especially, I'm not going to risk it.
I suspect that the 40cm (stiffer leathers) would not fit under the seat in front of me. The larger bags that I do have are more floopy; plus, if they got scratched, I wouldn't mind as much.
Overall, I'm suspecting that if I get the 40cm, I will always be pining for the 35cm. But to skip on a barenia... :(

Chloechloe, it IS hard to skip on a barenia, isn't it? I recently decided not to bid on a 35cm barenia Birkin despite the good condition and price because I knew it would be too heavy for me and because I knew it was a tad too big which means I'd be banging the corners into everything. Heartbreaking at the time, but quickly forgotten, which means that it must not have been the right bag for me. And MargieB is right, there's always another bag, and probably in exactly the specs you want!

Hm, and where did you see this 35cm barenia birkin??!! And is it still for sale?:graucho:

To conclude this episode, for those of you who are interested, I told the Seller that because of the size I am not going to buy. I have to think about downsizing what I carry everyday...you know, creaky joints and achy shoulders and whatnot. :) Ultimately, I don't want to buy another bag that sits in the closet! I still have a brand-new Chloe bag from a few years ago--beautiful leather--that I have yet to use even once! It's huge, could be an overnighter. Can't afford to do that with an Hermes.

Thanks for the input, everyone! It was really helpful! :)

Nothing is permitted behind your legs while the plane is taking off or landing. Anything you are carrying must be placed under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment so that if you needed to evacuate the plane suddenly, the aisles would be clear. Not even in business class would flight attendants permit you to leave a bag behind your legs during those times of a flight. Seriously.

A 40 is an amazing bag IMO, and barenia must be unbelievable!

Off topic, but relevant to Mistikat's statement, perhaps a special thread is needed to educate and/or remind us that airline travel is a serious affair. It is appalling to read anywhere on this fourm where people have been put off when their bags, in their opinions, were not treated with the utmost tenderness by TSA during the screening process, or, to try to manipulate carry-on requirements so that a precious piece of leather doesn't get bent out of shape at the risk of others safety. It's a handbag, plain and simple. Once you decide to carry-on any bag, regardless of brand, shape, or size you need to be prepared for the very real possibility that the flight crew, can, at anytime, deem it necessary to place your bag wherever they want to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers.

Hi there - I have a 35 Barenia Birkin with brushed PHW and I love it to death quite honestly. HOWEVER I do find it to be on the heavy side to carry - and I am quite used to carrying a lot of weight in my bags. I can imagine that a 40 Barenia would be stunning to see and appreciate but somewhat difficult to live with from a weight/practical perspective personally. As much as I love my Barenia birkin I do find myself carrying my Box Birkin more often simply because of the weight issue. I agree with the tPF'r who cautioned you that at the prices we are talking about with H bags, you should hold out for what you really want. Although I do imagine that resale on a 40 barenia would still be relatively easy given how coveted Barenia is....so perhaps you can try it, know for sure, and let it go if it isn't right for you? Good luck with your decision - and what a lucky decision it is to have to make!! :)

I am not sure how disagreeing with what should fit behind a passengers knees for take off and landing of a commercial plane could be construed as passive aggressive, but it is possible I've misunderstanding the point - sometimes I find posters comments hard to comprehend if ideas flow together without pause or clarification.

I must hang my head in shame, however, I am the queen of sliding my bag behind my legs (but in front of the storage area of the person behind me). The fact that I love black and dark bags and tend to wrap a blanket or GM c/s over my lap allows me to get away with this. I carry no more than a 32 HAC and usually fly business or first so perhaps the slightly smaller size (versus the 40) is a consideration.

Apologies Winston - I do think you have the right mindset - far more important than me being able to have my kindle or chocolate at my fingertips!
