2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

ETA: @Purses & Perfumes , if I have to check in a bag (DH share a rimowa trunk on wheels for ski trips etc), I carry a shoulder carry leather zip bag from Suarez (about the same size as DHs navy carry on, third pic on top of the trunk) as a cabin bag with a TPM Evelyn strictly as a plane carrying (altoids, emergency chocolate, Tylenol, hand sanitizer wipe, and eye drops thing). DH carries passports in a sac a depeches 21 (fourth pic). If I’m carrying on (no check in), I use a rimowa wheeled carry on and a weekender (olive green). The first pic contained all of our luggage for three weeks in Asia, minus a second soft weekender case for presents we brought there. We packed that weekender in the trunk to take home ) I also carry a Goyard St. Louis that packs flat in my olive weekender. We buy extra packing cubes (Away or another moderately priced brand) to store ski or other special use vacation gear). That way, we can pack faster. I save space by limiting my choices, color palette, and shoes and bags. I am fine living in doc martens and birkenstock sneakers for the duration lol.

Love both your green bags! I am a fan of green bags, and don't know why I don't have a green bag yet!:girlsigh: After seeing all the green beauties in this thread this week, I think I need one soon!

Thanks for the travel pics -- both you and your DH have great travel style! I remembered your helpful packing tips from a previous post (maybe last year), and implemented some of them for this trip. The packing cubes are an excellent idea. Love the sac a depeches -- perfect for passports and suchlike. The Gucci travel bag I saw (and keep thinking about, lol) was about the size of the olive green weekender in your picture (so quite roomy) and the lady who carried it had it resting on a similar wheeled carry on.

Good point about saving space by limiting color palette and other choices. I have two color palettes I rely on for travel -- one is with black and white, and the other with dark blue as base colors (with accent colors thrown in). Travel capsules and color palettes are a fascinating topic, in and of themselves!

What purse or bag do you carry as your personal item? Do you favor a tote, a large duffle bag or a smaller handbag? Would love to hear your thoughts.
In a previous, more elegant age of my life, I invested in a full set of Chanel travel luggage - black nylon with white details. I still use it for road trips or train travel, but it is a bit much for airport style. Sometimes, if I’m going to be attending an event which calls for a gown, I will use the garment sleeve as my personal item.

Otherwise, massive tote bag. Harveys Large Boat Tote or Wanderer, or a Panier depending on if it’s a warm location or cold one. Inside that, I have my usual small bag, my electronics, the paperback book I will read in emergencies, and a refillable water cup. Hat on my head.

I’ll admit, I used to just have the personal item, and I’d roll my clothes. Sadly, my shoulders started complaining about that plan a few years ago, so I do pack a suitcase. Sometimes I’ll have both mine and the Knight’s clothes in it. Sometimes, I roll clothes and it’s still mostly empty.

Still thinking about the Gucci carry-on bag that I saw at the airport. It made me take another look at my own luggage and carry-on options. Generally, my airport style (if one can even call it that) is quite low-key. No logo or premier designer items and any purses I carry are usually tucked inside my carry-on luggage. Generally, I believe most airlines allow one carry-on (like a small wheeled suitcase), and one personal item like a purse. I noticed that some people had large totes or bags as their personal item. Which brings me to a question I have been pondering on. What purse or bag do you carry as your personal item? Do you favor a tote, a large duffle bag or a smaller handbag? Would love to hear your thoughts.
I use a backpack as my personal item. I then had both my hand bags in that along with other stuff.

I’ve been hunting for a new carry-on bag lately actually. Currently I use this, which holds a lot but has gotten beat up and developed a small hole at the bottom. Plus it’s so lacking in shape that it annoys me - stuff slides around and gets lost.

I’d like to get a ‘weekender’ sort of bag but have not been finding many options that are to my liking. Lots of duffels that extend more in the horizontal direction which is not really what I want. Currently musing on this one.

Overall, to answer the question, I use a really big bag as my carry-on and put my smaller handbags inside it.

Your Chanel travel luggage sounds lovely. Glad you are still able to use it. I love train travel, even though I haven't been on a train in ages -- in my mind, it is associated with a slower, leisurely pace of life and glamour.

Tote bags do seem popular amongst a lot of us. I need to go look up the Harveys totes as I am not familiar with them. I understand what you mean about shoulders starting to complain. My mom had shoulder pain issues and after a while, she stopped using all her leather luggage, and would only use Vera Bradley duffels and big bags for travel because she said they were the lightest, and had the most pockets for organization.
I use a backpack as my personal item. I then had both my hand bags in that along with other stuff.
Backpacks are so practical, being a hands-free option, and I wish I could use them, but I keep thinking that they will be heavier than other carry-on options. I think I could do a mid-sized backpack, but not the very large ones that I sometimes see people travelling with. Do you have any recommendations for a mid-sized backpack with one or two compartments (ideally two main compartments).

I need a new carry-on bag too. I loved the Gucci, but it's probably not something I will get, especially since it has the logo on it. Your current bag is a pretty color, but yeah, it would annoy me as well if stuff ended up just sliding around. I think a slightly stiffer material like leather or even thick fabric helps avoid that sliding around. Also, interior and exterior pockets for organization always helps. I like the option you are looking at. The zipper compartment at the bottom is useful for keeping shoes and footwear separate from the rest of the personal items like clothing and toiletries.

I don't know whether you will be disappointed or admire my resolve but I bought the SS23 double-breasted. Saint Laurant Le Smoking but not the Mimosa Eel SdJ bag.

I was 100% on the jacket (second try) but feeling less sure about another bag so soon after 3 last year. I also have some more Cartier in my sights - and I can't buy everything I fancy. The bag would have been an extra and not something on my list.

The exercise did make we want an amber bag, and I may get the SDJ if still available - but later if possible.

I admire your resolve. Great jacket.

Looking for somewhere to put my new jacket (and a new vintage blouse) I ended-up going through stuff and now have another huge bag for charity/goodwill for next week (they pick-up Thurs). Some of those things were earmarked for various interested friends to pick-up but I'm a bit tired of waiting so they're going. A crossbody is in the mix.

I also noticed that DH has a lot of empty boxes and bags he insists on keeping, it's rally annoying.

I also found a snakeskin handbag I have absolutely no recollection of  also going to charity.

So that'll be 2 bags going out this month. Hallelujah!
