2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

Lanvin hobo bag - this is my most worn bag throughout 2022, it’s smaller than Chloe but fits the same amount of things and has two straps, can be worn crossbody and on the shoulder. It is less “in your face” as it doesn’t have any big logos or hardware, and easily transforms day to night. This one has really been one of my go to bags for short trips and one of the most comfy crossbody bags I have.
This one! For travel, I would prioritize comfort :) have a great trip and pls share pics!
+1 with @limom , re Vermeer, but @nymeria said it’s selling out, so I assume travelers should definitely get tickets in advance

So glad it wasn't actually pink trousers; you really never know with my wonky memory!

Yes, there were pink trousers lol

Are you going to see the Vermeer expo?
I hope we will, but their website was down all weekend, so I did a Friends membership instead, but I still haven’t received a confirmation email from them and next time I checked the tickets were available only for May, which is crazy! I would love to see the Girl with a Pearl earring, but that’s will be on the show only till end of March

I was thinking about where to post this topic but I'll give it a go here!

Is anybody else feeling kind of done with primary fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Dior? Perhaps it's a stylistic shift but I'm not really interested anymore ( unless it's a cooler vintage piece - I'm more so referencing purchasing new) I've gravitated towards understated yet fashion conscious brands such as Mansur Gavriel and Issey Miyake.

I pray this doesn't come across as rude but I'm sick of the status conscious conversations that come with owning things like Louis Vuitton and Gucci. It is no longer about the artistry but the ability to flex upon people who don't have the same means. It's noticeable when people purchase items for the name versus liking the piece. I never really viewed owning luxury items as "making it". I view them more as an investment into my own happiness and an extension of my personal aesthetic ; the way I showcase who I am as a fashion lover. I don't feel as if I align with LVs current trajectory : put out more, sell more, make more. Consume until you combust.

Now let's hear what you guys think! I look forward to reading your responses.
Logos…I am mixed. I don’t like logos for the sake of logos. Balenciaga and the CD Book Tote are perfect examples of that for me. Especially the Balenciaga “logo”, which serves no purpose but to advertise items that would be unremarkable otherwise because they are mostly retreads of designs done elsewhere first or basic staples. Have to justify the cost somehow, I guess. How they are done scream “Look at me!” to me. But some of the other logos people complain about are part of the history of the brand, such as LV monogram, the Gucci double G, the Dior trotter, the YSL, Chanel’s double C. Especially the LV monogram, which was developed over a century ago to combat counterfeits (I know, the irony). It is so much a part of who LV is that their leather bags play second fiddle and always will. Since I am all about vintage/heritage/classic and not about trends, logos like that appeal to me because of their iconography or look (the YSL logo is chic and sleek), not their status. So I love certain logos, but not others and own them only on vintage bags. I am not a fan of head to toe logos and certainly not mixing 3,4,5 different logos at one time. Reads as desperation to me and is unappealing.

I think this is a very hard time to be a designer or manufacturer Because things are moving so fast that you can no longer establish new icons. Logos are the only way to have a “signature” anymore that can be recognized by the masses without being labeled as passe. Trends seem to last weeks anymore, not even months, let alone years. Sock booots, cargo pants, bike shorts, the denim tuxedo, combat boots…all things that a year or two ago you would not be caught dead in and were encouraged to dump, but then became all the rage, only to be out again in a matter of weeks. Very little has true staying power in the churn of trends, so how can a label stay profitable and on trend while still having an identifiable “look.” Answer is they can’t, so enter the logo. And with the rise of the influencer, whose entire existence is about appearances, as well as what is new, it has become all about how something looks in the moment, not quality. Quality and longevity is boring, not novel…it won’t draw ”likes” or views because we have seen it before. And face it, social media influencers are here to stay because they are very cheap, effective advertising and it is the career of choice for a generation of young people, like being a rock star or movie star was for many of us, but so because you do not have to have any innate talent to do it.

I will wear logos as they call to me. All will be icons and all will be worn as individual statements because one is enough. I do not feel comfortable in multiple logo items. But I will wear logo and non-logo designer items together, like my Cartier watch with a mono Speedy And a Hermes scarf with the name folded in. Not to “tell” anybody anything, but because I love them and as parts of a cohesive look/outfit that suits me. And I will wear them with non-designer items because that’s what I have and they are all items I like. Designer or non-designer, I am at an age where trends be damned, I wear what I like. If I happen to be on trend, great! If I’m not, oh well…I look like me and I am happy with who that is.

I just got here, so I'm not tired of anything yet  I'm all bright eyed and bushy tailed. I like the look of logo clasps and embossed logos, but not so much all over logo print. I swear, when I joined this forum, I didn't intend to join a luxury forum. But when I just let the feed run on new posts, that's mostly what it feels like. That's most of the chatter. So since that's most of the chatter, that's now what my eyes keep looking at. Somehow I ended up in the room with a lot of rich folks who've already had so much premier designer logos that they're tired of them (and as I type, I realize that might sound some kind of way, so I hope I don't cause offense!). I consider both logo-covered and non-logo-covered multi-thousand dollar handbags a flex, with non-identical groups of people impressed by them.

You pretty much said what I was thinking!

And also as a woman of a certain age, over 40, I agree about the trend part too. At this point I wear what I like, suits my body & my aesthetic. If it’s trendy great, if it’s not, so what.

Hey, thank you so much! It was probably on H in action ( where I post most RTW action shots bc I generally pair with some form of H. Plus a newer one with the CDG skirt as dress, H lizard suede sample sale 2022 mules and 28K quadrille. The Dior dress alone gives me Velasquez las meninas vibes, and with the CDG, I get the picssso rendition lol

Great points

I think there is a slight difference in the wearing/avoiding logos if someone doesn't like to flex

Hi all! A week ago I left my beautiful Celine belt bag to be taken care of by Celine, basically aside of having some corner wear and hardware tarnishing after 4 years of year, somehow, I don’t know how, the bag had a sort of a scratch of the front bottom part that was kind of peeling. I wish I’ve taken a photo, but I was so scared about it that I immediately brought to the store asking them to take care of it. So long story short, the bag will be shipped to Tuscany to their leather artisans for repair, and for next month or two, I’ll be missing my most loved travel bag.

Since I’ll be traveling to Amsterdam and Paris soon, I just wanted you to help me pick a bag I’ll be travelling with:

- Chloe C small shoulder bag - can be worn crossbody and on the shoulder, transforms day to night by removing a longer shoulder strap. Fits my essentials. This has been seating for a while in the past few months in my closet, so possibly could be great to take her out for a trip.

- Lanvin hobo bag - this is my most worn bag throughout 2022, it’s smaller than Chloe but fits the same amount of things and has two straps, can be worn crossbody and on the shoulder. It is less “in your face” as it doesn’t have any big logos or hardware, and easily transforms day to night. This one has really been one of my go to bags for short trips and one of the most comfy crossbody bags I have.

Valextra Iside small - this one has never travelled with me, aside a short trip to Venice last year, it can be worn crossbody or on the crook of my arm. It has a similar shape to my Celine Belt bag, but smaller, and fits all my essentials. It’s also not as obvious to be a designer bag, but it’s a bit more dressy and formal than the other two. Perhaps I should check whether it fits my passport, as I need a bag that fits it for travel I know other two have no issues with it.

Obviously security is one of the main points for me, that’s why I’m choosing a bag that has a zipper or some sort of closure.

Also, should I be adding a vintage Chanel classic flap to my collection, wouldn’t it be a bit too repetitive with other black bags with gold hardware?

Travel with the one that's most versatile day-night and also secure

Half my Chanel's collection black/gld, same as is 1/3 of my H collection. I think as long as your RTW isn't all blk/gold (I got a bit of that as well - can't be helped if you like Chanel, Gucci and McQueen). You're only going to wear one bag at a time.

What figure for a bag makes me shake? I have posted, perhaps elsewhere, that I take the average price of all of my Covid deals or vintage bargains and apply them to current retail, to get a hypothetical discounted price. For a classic bag and brand that I will wear for decades more, I’ll spend more. So, my ceiling price is variable. . .

I wasn’t sure how I felt about my BBK28 retourne, phw, (bought during Covid for 7K USD) so i loaned it to my friend for months. I didn’t wear it much, but felt that I would regret rehoming it. I just realized that it would be perfect, handheld, for my comme des garçons Jacket, blouse, and skirt combo. The skirt can also be pulled up as a dress. . . The BBK would ground the outfit and be a nice classic backdrop. IMO A smaller K would be too precious and studied. So, I just talked myself into saving the money for a future hypothetical mini K lol.

You look so cute!! I love your outfit combos and style!

I'm not done, but I'm just a little tired or maybe bored.

I have never cared much for LV, bags or clothes, it's just not my style (I did try though, didn't work out.)
I enjoy looking at Gucci RTW but not sure about buying, same with Dior. The RTW has a sort of design that is distinct to the brand. You generally know it when you see it (and it's not necessarily the logo).
I like my Buberry and YSL RTW more for the simplicity and versatility.
However, I do buy from contemporary brands like All Saints, Maje, Frankie Shop, and I get a lot of compliments on those pieces as well. People get surprised when I tell them the brands, because they almost always assume RTW (or in general, something more expensive). :P

I do live in a privileged area where I see this stuff almost everyday. A CF feels just like a blink of an eye, a pause for a birkin or kelly, but I will stare at an exotic haha. So many LV, Gucci, YSL, Dior and some Prada, Fendi, BV. Where I live it's not always flexing, but it's just the way things are. People with money just buy what they want. The younger people will go for the trendier items or higher status brands, but it is what it is.

I have been enjoying my Polene bag, loving the shape and the warmth of the brown color. It's my only contemporary bag so I am not conscious of it at all when I carry it. (It was picked up by a client by accident in Moynat over the weekend, I left it on a table when I was trying on bags lol)

I have been more interested in quiet luxury or no-logos, started off with Moynat, but I have been eyeing Delvaux. Quite interested in contemporary brands as well, like Savettene (that price point is very tempting but I don't know much about the brand.)
I'm also getting more interested in Bottega Venetta, eyeing the teen jodie...that yummy leather is quite tempting as well.

I'm okay with taking a break from the big fashion houses. Nice to check out other things and do some exploring!
