2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

@Vintage Leather, there is a lot of change in your life. Your knight is growing up quickly
(I raised my adopted step brother who is half my age, and after he finished school, the years slowed down again lol)
im sure Vintage Mama relies on you and appreciates everything you do for her too

I totally get your Tom Ford urge. I feel the same way about THE first Miu Miu gold buckle matelasse coffer bag. It was this one which exploded into popularity yesrs ago before many luxury bags really broke the 1K mark https://www.theluxurycloset.com/uae-en/women/-p696459

It was on billboards and buses. I bought it, then warehoused it bc even then it was too fashion, too in the moment, for me to wear outside. Plus I was beginning my phw phase and slowly divesting myself of even chanel ghw CFs. Then the coffer was passé, so I eventually gave it to my m9ms assistant. I don’t even really wear gold hw, even though I now wear gold jewelry. The gold jewelry only started to happen in 2021, when my DH and independent jeweler told me, after at least twenty years of silence on the topic, that YG does better on my skin tone. I’m also a vintage inclined, structured sellier bag person and only carry hobos in my imagination. I’ve had the inexplicable itch to buy it again. I haven’t done so precisely bc I’ve given myself permission to do so lol  It’s good to purposefully refrain from something lol.

@DME , @lill_canele , @Purses & Perfumes, i chalk up the general urge to shop to springtime, renewal, reinvention, seasonal anxiety. if you treat the shopping bug like an allergy, it will pass. My closet is full and my weight has stabilized in a happier place, yet I don’t want to purge again. So, this is an ideal time for me to take a breath; take stock; and rotate through items I love that haven’t seen daylight in a while. It’s a peaceful place. My dior SA, who is young and sweet ( I have many t shirts that I still wear that are significantly older) said something obvious that resonated. All of his clients, and even his peers who are also quite young, none of us need anything. It’s all about desirability and possibility. So, I’ll go to a premier RTW pre launch next week and think about buying a few items for fall. And, that’s about it.

I also saw an adorable wicker candle holder by Celine, a brand I do not buy, that I thought could be a cute mini bucket bag. There are also a ton of better priced riffs on this, from Zara to etsy. I ran the idea by a close knit group of shopping buddies, and they brought me back to reason. Lol. One of my SAs gave me a handmade bag by a friend of hers who owns an independent concept store in Venice , so I’ll wear that instead  it isunstructured, but drapes into a precise shape on the shoulder. here it is with an H shirt dress (sample sale 2022) and chanel sandals that are maybe a decade old IDK :) The bag is so well cut that it keeps it’s geometric shape even when loaded with books, second pic. So I guess it’s structured after all :) reminiscent of some issey miyake circa 1991, plantation store

I like “purposefully refrain” I’ll remember that, thank you.

@nyeredzi Love the color of your MJ tote. I own several of them. I find them very wearable & easy to use.
Yes, I know, you enabled me here, lol! It is definitely more wearable than the bag whose place it took. That bag was so cute, but it annoyed me every time I wore it. I gave it to a coworker friend and told her if she finds she's not using it in a couple of years, give me a chance to get it back, as maybe my life will have changed and I'll want a small bag by then. The one thing I have to be careful of with this tote is that the strap adjustment is done with a metal bulb and notches that fall around the middle of the strap. And if I don't have the strap turned the right way, that bulb will dig into my back and be quite uncomfortable. This thing:

On a more serious note, the Knight is beginning his senior year of high school. Which means 1) I’m losing my traveling companion, 2) there are dozens of deadlines all coming up in about 3-6 months, and 3) we’re doing college visits and it’s seriously messing with my head that things that were popular when I was last on a college campus are popular again.

Like, it feels like I’m in a time warp and I’m feeling like I haven’t accomplished anything but I’m a little more creaky and a lot older than I used to be.

Meanwhile, I’m worried about the Knight’s mental health, and will he care for himself when he doesn’t have anyone to remind him.

Meanwhile, I’m worried about VintageMama, and her health. She resents the doctors and medicine and she needs them and so I am trying to make the medical equipment pretty. Like, I’m taking her blood pressure cuff, getting rid of the institutional nylon case and storing it in a vintage Gucci vanity.

Some days I think I might have her in my life another ten years, and some days it’s just a few weeks. She keeps shopping and buying things she’s sure that I’ll need or that the Knight will need and I keep feeling overwhelmed.

The Knight is trying to encourage us to do family road trips, ect. And VintageMama keeps making excuses not to because she feels miserable and VintageDaddy’s loss two years ago hit him really hard, and he keeps thinking about what he has lost. And I’m in the middle.

Meanwhile, I keep wondering if moving would make life better for us or worse. Honestly, there’s a lot of house maintenance that I can’t do alone, and this house was just about the right size for four people but much to big for one.

So, yeah.

I’m also applying for jobs.

In a year, my chick is flying the nest. In a year to ten, I’ll be losing my mother. In three months to two years, I’ll probably be moving. But there is very little I can do about it right now, other than worry, clean and shop. Make plans that might or might not come into being.

I'm sorry. That's a lot to handle. College prep and visits are super busy and crazy. I have no children but I remember when I traveled around for colleges and even I felt overwhelmed and just kind of wanted to pick one and get it over with.

I somewhat relate with you on mothers. My mother doesn't resent doctors but she does not bother to go see them. Her eyesight has been getting worse and in the past few years I found out that she was driving around with blurry vision. I would get stressed out knowing she wasn't able to read signs clearly or nearly getting into a couple of accidents. It took over 2 years of persuasion for her to go see an eye doctor and get prescription glasses. She would always blow me off and say it wasn't that bad. But she finally got them earlier this year so now I can relax about that part. :P

But yes, again, that's a lot. It must be overwhelming. I'm sorry. I hope you'll be able to enjoy time with your son as you both travel around exploring the colleges and make the most of it!

Spring shopping itch is definitely a thing. Ditto with fall. I find I go on a bit of a hiatus as the seasons stretch on and shop less. But my anxiety this year is definitely contributing! And I’m finding more pieces of interest this year than in the past several, although I’m not sure why. I actually thought of you the other weekend when I wandered into the new Dior near me (which I didn’t know existed!) and got talked into trying a RTW piece. I feel like I need to ease into that with something more reasonably priced, but it was really, really tempting. Like the Celine cocoon coat from six years ago, I worry this may be one that gets away. Had the cost been a bit lower, I would have dived in. Even DH agreed (and he’s a hard sell!). Excuse the lululemon. I dressed that way on purpose (and left the Birkin at home) so as NOT to be bothered in the nicer stores, but clearly it didn’t work.

You look great and it’s a solid classic piece that looks like it fits perfectly :)

It did fit perfectly, which really shocked me as I don’t consider my body type made for RTW. Nothing has fit well any time I’ve tried in the past (except for a few Burberry coats and that Celine, but outerwear is a different beast and one can own only so many coats!). I know they can tailor, but I have zero imagination, so need things to look close to right when I try them on. I’m still contemplating it. The SA was lovely and he suggested the piece, taking one look at me and one look at the jacket, knowing instantly it would work and was my size. How they do that, I don’t know.
