2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

Multi-color week is all Brahmin for me. The large Duxbury is doing triple duty, because I also used it in the pink week and in the orange week. It's currently the oldest bag in my young collection, at about 4 years old. The small one is a Small Nadine, and it's deceptively small. It looks like it should hold more, but tapers at the top so doesn't really. It's also stiff, so doesn't stretch much to hold more, and because of the taper, my hand gets scratched when I put it in. That bag is cute, but is perpetually on the chopping block. The minute I feel like I have one too many bags, it'll probably be the first to go. The big tote/bucket might be the 2nd, lol. It's almost too big. I think it's even larger than the large Duxuries I have, and they are a little too big. Now that I have a number of bags, the amount of stuff I carry daily is moving toward a central point - enough to fit in my medium size bags. Bags much smaller than those, or much larger than those, feel out of place, and too big or small when I carry them. Anyway, I find them all very pretty, and they are very hard-wearing. The Large Duxbury has lost its shape a little, but other than 2 or 3 very minor nicks you'd have to search for, the coating is perfect still.

And April stats. Despite a lot of action regarding the Kate Spade Heart bag, buying 3 all together and keeping 1, that 1 was included as a March purchase. I also got a Nolita, which @Iamminda says is an slg so doesn't count toward bags. I'm going to go with that , as it's mostly a wristlet, even if you can attach a chain to wear crossbody. Hey, we tell ourselves what we need to!

Okay, stats:

Jewelled Bags

Slightly stretching the theme with enamel, studs, mirrors, leather appliqué...Shall we just say embellished?

I'm shocked how many EXTRA bags I have, and how many of them are Guccis  . I use this group quite a lot, so there's the fantasy of me being oh so understated and sophisticated gone slightly adrift LOL.

Sonia Rykiel enamel lips clutch (and matching jewellery)
Gucci Leather Hearts (and studded) Valentine's Boston
Gucci Satin and Swarovski Small 1973
Gucci silver gold and tigers-eye minaudière
Bracher and Emden Swarovski encrusted mixed-skin clutch (I think this is the only one I ever liked from them and it's very useful)
Fior 1970s enamel and diamanté minaudière (with chain)
Gucci studded strap(s) Blondie
Gucci Mirage black patent clutch (with outside mirror - so useful)
Gucci blue suede studded Babushka

Missing phots of me 2 Sonia Rykiel Dominos, one of my Judith Leiber, Gucci real Lapis clasp patent bag (you've seen it)

Gorgeous! I definitely think of last week’s theme as embellished as opposed to just jeweled. I don’t have any bags right now that fit that tho.

I think I’m photographing a series, “Drunken Bags” where I match handbags and cocktails.

So since it’s jeweled week, May I present Roadrunner?

Made by Enid Collins, a bag designer from Texas, Roadrunner is made with leather, wood, canvas and crystals. Made between 1953 and 1970, and sold at stores like Nieman Marcus and Goldwaters. In 1961, an Enid Collins bag sold for $22. For a bit of perspective, the Gucci Bamboo Top Handle bag sold for $68 around that time.

Enid Collins spawned many imitators - including a series of kits where people could make their own bag as a paint by number.

I bought this one on the secondary market, but my grandmother actually owned a version of this bag, as well as an owl, and a “money tree”

I love the Drunken Bags series! I have a tendency to do this too, esp in the ‘what bag are you carrying’ thread.

Multicolored bags! I counted the Tory in blue week, but with the red it does need more thought when being used like a multicolored bag.

How absolutely adorable (and superb) is that bag!

Regarding the 1930s - DH and I watch a lot of 30s and 40s movies. We always note who the costume designer was. Most of the hats are ridiculous, yet no well dressed woman in those days went anywhere without a hat. In the 1940s, the hairstyles were horrible. Time gives us clarity. I'm sure you are putting together your vintage outfits in a way that is much more flattering than the way they were originally worn.

Oh no, don't say that, I love the hairstyles of the 1940s. Can't do many of them but I wish I could.

Bags no, clothes yes. Between weight fluctuations & my clothing tastes changing due to me getting more in tune with what my style is, my wardrobe has changed quite a bit.
Bags yes. They are accessories. We are the opposite. In 2008, I thought i would leave chanel bags behind for Hermes; that I only needed one H bag: a BBK28 ghw. And that I would never wear a Birkin. Then I thought I would leave ghw for phw. Changing horses midstream like this is very costly and there is nothing like the aggravation of buying a bag two plus times bc I have rehomed it too soon. During various decades I fall in and out of love with bag styles, colors, sizes.

Clothes, no. I’ve made mistakes in purchases, who hasn’t. But, favorite pieces remain. I do have to have them altered, or save them in the hopes I will be able to diet back into them. I have garments from my grandmother and vintage from the 1960s and 1970s in great condition.

I also sometimes get tired of the expense and aggravation of various rescue projects, usually vintage fur or leather pieces. The worst project ever was a vintage black lizard coat with gold buttons. Very 1970s studio 54. Not everything can be successfully professionally refurbished.

Jewellery out 1 (19C Indian miniature hand-painted portrait on ivory brooch). I gave it to an Indian colleague.

As some of you will know, Cartier had a price hike. I didn't want bankrupt myself this month trying to beat it, so either I have more time or maybe I wasn't that 'into' the ring. I certainly have enough rings.

RTW /shoes out 5
RTW 3 (2 pairs of black jeans (for work) and cheap leather platform sandals - just in case I ever take my boots off)

Sounds amazing - you tried.

I have a 70s white coat with black sealskin lapels, the white leather has some discolouration and needs an overhaul. It's worth trying - but I know it's 50/50.

Doing Pinterest style boards has made me realise there are a few styles and colours (RTW and accessories) I won't be revisiting. Some things are worth keeping because they can be styled differently, and some things, although they looked OK and still fit me, I've have grown/fallen out of love with.

Did you ever just want to start over with your bags and clothes?
No. I feel like it would be a big waste. I can't discard perfectly good items.

Right now I weigh more than I'd like so I'm not really focusing on my clothes. I just try to put on something that doesn't make me look too bad. When I was thinner, I enjoyed getting dressed.

I try to avoid multicolor bags as I find them harder to coordinate with clothing but I am always drawn to them. Some of these I've might have shown in other categories.
