I’m feeling a little more human, so I decided to take a little time for Year in Review. Last year, my resolutions were ready in December - I knew what was harming me and moved forward on controlling it. This year, my resolution is “don’t set yourself on fire to keep others warm.” Which sounds great, but isn’t as quantifiable.

Little background: I have classic taste with a streak of whimsy; still have the 1970s Gucci bag I carried in high school. Started in this thread halfway through 2020; last year’s goal was “Simplicity”, with action items of donating or selling 2021 items, touching all my stuff and funding all new purchases from my sales.

Last year, I learned to greet Death like an old friend. She certainly visited often enough. This year, I want to focus on living; staying healthy, having adventures, reducing stress.

So after weeks of debating and making lists and cutting back lists and making two year goals and refining old goals, I am cutting back to:

I’m feeling a little more human, so I decided to take a little time for Year in Review.

2022 in review:

Health wise, this year has been challenging.
January 2022 - VintageMama has Covid
Feb 2022 - Max went over the rainbow bridge.
March-May - VintageMama had a massive heart attack. After coming out of the hospital, needed to relearn how to walk and go to the bathroom.
August - I have bronchitis
October-December - The Knight has medical problems. Getting the right medication is a challenge.
December - Covid for everyone! Over 3 weeks with symptoms.

Bags In: 3, one of which doesn’t count
(I replaced my knitting bag with one of better quality and in better shape)

Bags out: 7, one of which was replaced by the bag that doesn’t count. I also sold 4 accessories, as well as sending two boxes to Thredup. Donated 500 items.

Accessories in: 2 pieces of jewelry, one of which I’ve been looking for for roughly 15 years.

As for the goals that I listed back at the beginning of the thread:
1) Keep up with doctors appointments; between the GP, Endo, Oncologist, dentist, insurance - it gets overwhelming. That’s my primary job: work, stuff and family are second.
Not going to lie, my performance on this one was… less than ideal. Wrong kind of insurance, sick family, getting sick myself. Room for improvement.

2) Close down online stores. For years, my closet has had a fairly high churn because I usually could sell my bags for more than I paid.
So why not buy and sell?
Because it stresses me out and it’s a lot of work and I’m exhausted most of the time. I just need to consign and take the L
In 2021, my goal was to eliminate 2021 items from my house. As a part of that, I sold over 200 items between Facebook groups, posh and eBay. I donated or gifted another 1900 items. This year, I wanted more health and experiences and less stress. I did go back to selling things around August as I uncovered them, but it’s closer to 20 items.

I feel guilty about donating to big box thrifts, because I know it’s not the most efficient downstream for stuff. On the other hand, I also have a father who passed away and a mother in poor health who has moved in with me. So I have So Much Stuff.

Decades of collectibles and costume jewelry and books and art and holiday ornaments. I’ve been trying to donate to appropriate groups (donating art supplies to a charity that distributes art supplies to teachers, vs goodwill), or RAOK or sell to people who actually want stuff. But it’s a major balancing act between my sanity and my conscience.

So, we’ll call this one a partial success.

3) Finish at least three project bags. And donation/gift/consignment is valid “finishing”
Finally, an unmitigated triumph. I restored one Judith Leiber bag, I sold two Hermes bags in need of restoration, and I donated my old LV Noe knitting bag, and replaced it with an Hermes brown Togo GM market bag.

4) Go through all my clothes and eliminate stuff that a) doesn’t fit right now, and b) I wouldn’t be willing to pay to alter. I’m tentatively scheduling this for September timeframe when I see how recovery is going with medical stuff
Another success. I did do a big overhaul of my day clothes, and eliminated a lot. Didn’t get to the specialty stuff, but considering the fact I didn’t really have a big window of “I and my family are all healthy” at all this year, I did well and I’m claiming the W.

A spectacular read @Vintage Leather! You have endured a lot of challenges this year. Congratulations on all of the progress on your goals absolutely fantastic! I am still amazed at all of your hard work on exiting >2100 items last year. Great job on this year’s sales and outs.:yahoo:

With everything you have been through it is amazing that you still accomplished so much.

Speaking of SLGs, despite getting Covid earlier this month (recovered now), I’ve found a new use for my relatively new bastia!

My ginger chews and cough drops fit perfectly!

(I occasionally feel like coughing when I breathe in cold dry air. Keeping these handy in case I need one when I’m out and about.)

Btw I’m not much of an SLG person and I’m not that creative so I’m sure this isn’t anything revolutionary haha.

I use one of my SLGs (the pink one with the turnlock) for cough drops and Pepto tablets! Maybe I can get a group shot of the others later.

Thanks for sharing this year in review VL!!! So sorry to hear you had such a rough year. You really accomplished a lot tho!!! 2100 items exited? That’s fantastic!

@Vintage Leather , I cannot say it better than @More bags above. I hope 2023 is easier for you and your loved ones.

Doing my own year in review…

Happy New Year everyone! I’ve decided on the below for my goals / resolutions for 2022:

Bag Resolutions:
  • Impose a handbag-purchase waiting period. 2 weeks minimum, try for 3.
  • Do not get caught up in summer bags, which largely serve the Caribbean jet-setting life that you do not have.
  • Sell the following mistake purchases: Nanushka hobo, vintage Coach station bag, Coach micro Tilly, Coach Rogue.
  • No Chanel bags, unless it is the crumpled black square mini from yesteryear, or the perfect purple. SLGs are ok.
  • Focus on getting small add-ons, like charms or chains, to bring variety to bags you already have.

Bag Acquisition Goals (only if the right one comes along):
  • Another green bag in a rich emerald or similar color. Not a flap satchel.
  • A bag in a rich plum color.
  • The perfect raspberry red bag.

Non-Closet related:
  • Lose 15-20 lbs.
  • Continue the general house purge with Mr J.
  • Get involved in one local community thing to meet new people.
  • Take more local, weekend trips.
  • Date night once/ month.

I did pretty well on the first set of bag goals. Imposed waiting periods, did not buy more Chanel, sold all the bags I mentioned. I did buy two summer bags, but one of them I’ve been wearing even in fall and winter so I feel like that’s a half win.

I didn’t do well on bag acquisition goals. Got THREE green bags this year but two of them are flap satchels lol. I guess I like what I like. But didn’t find the right plum or red bags yet.

And on life goals: we did do plenty of date nights and a lot of house purging. But I’ve not lost the weight yet or joined a community thing so those will have to shift on to be 2023 targets.

My 2022 Goals:
1. Although I am not interested in downsizing, I do need to rehome items I no longer like/use.
2. SLGs - Although I did not add a lot in 2021, I would like to cut back even more in 2022. I would like to add a long LV wallet & some gray SLGs.
3. Jewelry - I was big into silver in 2021. I would like to continue & add a few more Lagos pieces.
4. I want to finally add a YSL bag.
5. Continue to track my bag usage.
6. Stop saving my items & use them. Bags, clothes, shoes, etc they’re meant to be used & enjoyed.
7. Borrowing from @More bags the idea of enjoying a wardrobe that supports my real lifestyle vs my fantasy life.
I did not do well at sticking to my 2022 goals, lol.
1. I rehomed some bags, but not enough. I will be going in the office more in 2023. I will pay attention to what I really use vs. what sits and downsize accordingly.
2. I did not add the long LV wallet or gray SLGs. Did not add a ton of SLGs though. Partial success.
3. Added more costume jewelry than anything. Only Lagos piece was my Mother’s Day gift.
4. Did not add a YSL bag. Should probably do it before they have too many more price increases.
5. Did track my bag usage.
6. Have gotten better about using my items. Will continue that in 2023.
7. I’ve gotten a lot better about adding items that fit my actual life vs my fantasy one.

December stats:

1 bags in
1 bags out
0 SLGs in
1 SLGs out

YTD stats
4 bags in
7 bags out
7 SLGs in
15 SLGs out

As I recall I didn't have many well-defined 2022 goals. I continued to track my bag wearing. Most bags didn't get that much wear because I have too many still. I have some listed and when those sell, I'll figure out the next ones to go. If I had known they were going to hold off on reporting sales to the IRS this year, I would have tried to sell more.

I ordered a SLG last night that I'll count in 2023 when it comes.

I've done well in clearing out household items this year. I'll continue on the same track next year. It's nice to have my cabinets organized. I regretted getting rid of some old sheets as it turned out they would have been handy when we needed to move my tortoise. I had to use sheets I wasn't sure I was ready to get rid of.

I had made a goal sometime in the middle of the year to read more - reading at least 10% of a book a day. Most books I have on my kindle are 300-400 print pages long so it's not hard to do. I've been reading before bed, usually 15 to 20 percent. I can't upload anything new to my kindle so once the backlog is gone I'll have to buy a new one. I think it will take over a year though.

I made a decision this year to not buy any bag over $1000 and will probably not over $500. Of the 4 bags I bought this year, one was NWT from a resale site and the rest were from retail stores. Two of those were bought full price (not on sale.) Nothing was over $400. I love them which made me realize I can get just as much happiness from a lower priced item as a premier item, and there is a lot less worry about ruining them or resale value.

This year I had a lot of fun with bags. It was incredibly hard year and playing with my collection helped take my mind off of it. Of the 7 goals I listed only the last one didn't get accomplished. I have more ins than outs with my bags. Slgs I had more outs than ins.
Dec Stats
Bags in 4
Bags out 1
Slgs in 1
Slgs out 2
Sport/Travel Bags in 1
Sport/Travel Bags out 1
I don't like to think how many bags I would have if I wasn't in this thread.
Hope Everyone has a Happy New year!
