Well, I have taken another run at rectifying my beloved Dior tote. As you know, I have been battling that cracking handle issue and have given up on getting it repaired by Dior. So, I tried tying it with a twilly, whose colors complement it but it kept slipping grr...

View attachment 4099116

So today I went and got some velvet ribbon and wrapped it tightly. It is holding and adds cushioning to the hand. The color looks better in real life. I could have used a wider ribbon so that there are less horizontal lines but for now, I think I have found my long term solution..I am satisfied. What do you think?

Could you put the twilly on top of that? I think the velvet ribbon looks nice though! Great job!

It looks pretty with the velvet ribbon. I think narrow is better... too wide and it would buckle.
How do you get it to stay on the bottom. Is there a little knot on each end that I'm not seeing?

Thanks Elainepg Heh heh, it’s just tucked at the moment. I do need to figure out a knot to secure it, but as it is, it is holding.

+1. I think a lighter ribbon that coordinates would look prettier. But, I’m glad you found a good option!!

Yes I am going to try other color options. I’m really just so happy that I no longer have to agonize over the cracked handle!

Oh well duh...what a great idea! Thanks bakeacookie! Will report back...

OMG! I’ve mentioned I evaluate my bags each year in September to decide what I should keep. If I haven’t worn it at least 6 months in the year, I sell it. (unless it’s a special use bag or there is another VERY good reason for me not having used it.)

Well, I was puttering around in the closet and talking out loud fairly randomly to Mr. S about my bags and what I’ve worn (He was watching TV. I really thought he was pleasantly half listening - if that, LOL! - to my chatter.)

All of a sudden he says “About 3/4 of the year is gone. What bags haven’t you worn at least 4ish times?”

I looked at my list and saw that there were 8 bags fitting that criteria which he encouraged me to pull out so he could see which ones they were.

The next 20 minutes are a haze of chaos, mayhem and generalized fashion trauma :whut: as he asked me pointed questions about why I wasn’t wearing the bags, whether I really loved the bags and if there were better bags I could replace them with. :faint: He said he was tired of seeing a few just sit there and dared even tell me one bag is just “homely”.

Soooooo...at the end of this inquisition “we” decided to get rid of 7 of the bags. And, I’ve been given the mission to replace them with a few bags I actually love and will use.

But, er... I don’t have a wish list of bags right now. Which is why I hadn’t bought anything. So I’m down to 22 bags and feeling a little naked. :panic: No idea what I’m gonna do next. LOL!

Wow!
Awesome that he was listening and then helped you decide which ones really needed to go.
Which ones are on the chopping block? Were you surprised by them or did you pretty much know already?

Yes, I love this bag! Style, shape, size, weight, color..everything.. except the flat glued handle:annoyed: why did they not do a rolled handle:confused1: sigh.

Yes bummer about the twilly. Docride once suggested using gauze bandage under twilly to cushion Birkin handles. While the twilly is a tad short for the panarea handle, I may still try this approach.

Thanks! Yes I agree. Will try lighter color.
I didn't realize the rolled handles were a functional improvement!!! Why exactly? Are they stronger due to the rolling?

That's amazing, ESP that he HELPS with the decision and ENCOURAGES BETTER purchases!!! Where do I find someone like that?!!!?:nuts::nuts:

What a fabulous story! It is as if he stood in for your conscience and really held you accountable to your own rules! I love it! Thanks for sharing and good luck with your next steps. I hope you have fun!

My DH also motivated my last edit. I am happier and feel lighter for having these bags out of the closet (total 8 out for the year so far). I haven’t felt the need to replace them. I am wearing what I chose to keep more frequently.

Hi Pianolize! I did an image search to illustrate..The flat handles are two pieces that are glued and sewn. This is what happens to the flat handle on the Panarea

F3EFCCB8-9886-452C-A1B5-4C73DA30E16B.jpeg Ick! Mine hasn't gotten this bad ..yet

One season they did this pinky-red tote with this roll handle (I couldn't find that image) but this is from the same line...the rolled handle is one piece of leather that has one seam..made properly, the seam will not land on your hand or shoulder. See below.

I think the act of putting tote over shoulder is a “rolling in the hand” action. Over time, the flat handles are under so much stress that they split.

Having said that, I have larger width flat handles that haven't split. I suspect that there is less “rolling” with wider flat handles. That’s my theory anyway. It really is too bad about this. I really love this bag...you’d think they’d improve it but then maybe it would last too long? And they want to sell more? If so, the great irony is that I am reluctant to get another Panarea.

OH!!! I completely see, TY so much for this excellent explanation!!!
Q: how long/w how much use do the flat handles get this way?! I'd def be out of my mind if this happened. So do ppl just deal with this as is?! I do much prefer the rolled anyway, but as you said, it only came that way one season?!:facepalm:

Well, my goodness! I do believe Mr. Sparkle deserves his own seat at the tPF table! :P

My DH has done this a couple of times, but usually on a much more limited basis (usually, it’s a “Which bag do you like better, this one or that one?” type of thing). Once, though, he had me line up all my luxury bags so he could see them all at once (believe me, my heart was pounding at the prospect of him freaking out, but he remembered ALL of them!). I owned a Burberry bag at the time, and I remember him looking at it and saying, very objectively, “That one doesn’t look up to the standard of the others.”

It’s pretty amazing when you realize your DH has actually been paying attention all along and — beyond that — knows exactly what questions to ask, as well as what suits you.

I can totally understand you feeling a bit “naked” — you’re stripping off SEVEN bags! But how fun! I’ll be really interested to see what bags replace these 7 (and, if you don’t mind sharing, what the 7 bags are). Maybe start by finding that beautiful tote that’s been on your mind?

I love this so much and am also amused because DH is not interested in my bags at all. I'm okay with it, but it would be so fun if he actually encouraged me to get more bags (even if I had to get rid of some). Maybe this is partly because I'm so new to bag-loving, but I don't see him ever getting excited about my bags or giving me advice about them. It does sound like fun!

OMG, I so love these stories - keep them coming! And I can totally relate. DBF was a novice to handbags and after three years he recognizes brands and models all by himself... and regularly watches and comments on my collection. Well, I ask for his opinion, too, when I am considering a new bag ... or jewellery ... or clothes or shoes ...
