So as half of us are waking in 2011 and the New Year, while the other half of us are putting on our last minute preparations for those New Year's Eve celebrations, looking through the closet and selecting the perfect bag to carry for the occasion, it's time to look back at 2010, MJ style!
The year started out relatively quiet without anything truly new and exciting. We saw a few new styles added to the Paradise collection, which really seemed to hit it's stride during the spring and summer months. The Rio has proven to be a popular choice, but those who prefer soft, slouchy shoulder bags there were plenty of styles to choose from - the Kate, Evelyn and later the Leigh.
The python embossed styles were still relatively popular altho most were created minus the stardust studs that proved so popular in 2009. There were a few "sleepers" from Spring/Summer that seemed to take a while to find their stride - the Firebird collection and the Aztec line weren't nearly as popular as I had imagined them to be, altho they seemed to gain more attention once some of these bags were marked down, while there were a few "misses" with the Dancer, Parachute and Boho lines (which STILL sit on store shelves unsold at second/third markdown!). Overall, MJ seemed to be lying low during S/S and when we got a preview of F/W we saw why!!
MJ F/W always seems to be full of surprises and 2010 was no exception! We saw the introduction of the Lacquered Leather bags, which proved to be extremely popular! Taking the tradition of MJ's quilted leather and enhancing it with an added layer of protection and shine was sheer genius, but it was the leather woven chains that really seemed to be a hit with most MJ fans. The Westside was introduced, which altho a relatively "simple" design, proved to be a "Hit" and capitalizing on the popularity of the ever-so-simple and basic "Single" series, the XL Single was welcomed with open arms.
Undoubtedly, the popularity of MAD MEN and anything "Retro" turned the refined and lady-like Garbo collection into a MAJOR hit. With it's textured leather in gorgeous colors, bags like the Greta, Garbo, Ava and Camille made the most of it's basic lines and MJ's amazing eye for detail.
MJ was big on exotics this year and we saw bags made from almost every type animal skin available - calfskin, lambskin, buffalo, ostrich, python, croc, beaver, mink - we saw it all with the introduction of the Gene, Veronica, Absinthe, and yes, even the Gilda and Ash!
We saw the Large Zip Wallet surpass the classic Zip Clutch as most people's wallet of choice. Stams in various types of leather - classic quilted, lacquered, polished, patent and python embossed, with added details such as tassels, leather ties and once again - the leather woven chains!
Overall, MJ's had a stellar year during 2010. What were some of your favs? Your hits and misses? Which bag are you secretly earning for and hope to still acquire? Anything you couldn't wait to get your hands on, only to discover that it wasn't quite what you had expected it to be? Share your thoughts about 2010
Hope you all have a wonderful, safe and happy new year -- I for one, can't wait to see what surprises MJ brings to 2011!!
