Its just easier to tell the non-NY people that, since many have never heard of SI (I tried explaining where it is to someone in a band that has toured extensively throughout the US, and he had no idea what I was talking about). I find in NYC it really depends on what neighborhood you're in. I was on Madison and 57th this morning (I don't get up there much) and just about EVERY woman walking past me had a serious bag.
Midtown where I spend most of my days, I see a lot of Le Pliage, Coach (the nice leather ones) and some indies inbetween.
I have a friend on Long Island and whenever I go to gettogethers there, it's like a Coach store, EVERYONE has some form of Coach bag.
