Hi all
My SO and I have been looking at engagement rings and we have settled on the Tiffany setting. I originally thought I wanted an F or G colour diamond but have realised that I’m not that colour sensitive and just yesterday saw a beautiful ring that is an I colour. I never would have guessed it was an I colour and it means that I could get a larger carat ring for the same price as the G colour I had been looking at.

First 2 pics are of the 1.27 G colour and the other pics are the 1.42 I colour. I could only see the colour difference when I held a 2ct G colour right against the I colour diamond. (As you can see there’s a difference in the lighting too but both are beautiful and sparkly in person).

Can you please let me know your thoughts and advice?

Thanks in advance!

This is very personal, some people are more color sensitive than others. If you cannot tell the difference and the other specs are just as good, than absolutely go with the larger diamond. Make sure to take it outside in the sun, where the color will appear more warm and look at it from the side angle vs the top view (as in one of your photos), as that also shows more warmth. If it still looks good to you, then you have your answer. If you want to upgrade the size in the future, it would be a concern because I color is harder to sell, but Tiffany will allow you to trade in your diamond towards an upgrade, so that alleviates this concern. You can also consider a stone with mild blue fluorescence to make it look a bit whiter. Fluorescence is sometimes seen as a bad thing, but this is only because with very strong fluorescence (especially in a colorless or near colorless range stone), it can make the stone look milky and less clear in a certain percentage of stones (this occurs in less than 20% of this specific category, if my memory is correct, it is a stone by stone basis). Both diamonds are beautiful, you can’t go wrong.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I took the I to the window of the store and it actually looked even better in natural light than it did under the spot lights in the store. I would never have guessed it was an I and if the SA had told me it was a G then I would have believed it so I think I’m just getting hung up on what the specs are on paper. The I ring was just as beautiful as the G in person - my only concern is as that others might be able to see some colour differentiation that I can’t. I’m most likely overthinking it now!

What you see is what matters. I personally can’t go below a G, because I am more color sensitive, but many people cannot tell the difference between an G, H or I, especially when worn.

As I spend most of my time on Pricescope, I would say to look into the Vatche U113 setting and a Whiteflash ACA or Crafted by Infiniti diamond (high performance diamonds sells). You will get a much, much better cut and more fire and sparkle. Less pricy as well. Diamond cutting technology is so advanced now and even a GIA Excellent cut rarely actually is....the "super ideals" are taking over and once you see one you won't go back!

At least go to the HCA tool on the pricescope website and plug the numbers of the two diamonds you are interested in if you are set on Tiffany. Ideal is 2 and below score.

Pricescope members will help you even more - they are so informed on that forum.

Thank you for this advice. I will ask for the specs!

I would go with the bigger one if you can't visually tell the color difference yourself. It's really what you see that matters. Most everyday people who are not on TPF either don't really care about the specs on paper or aren't going to be able to tell what a ring's specs are just by looking at it.

I used to think that only diamonds with a color grade of G or above were good diamonds until I realized that most of the jewelry stores that I shop at sell jewelry made up of H and I grade diamonds. And when shopping for jewelry, I honestly couldn't tell the difference with just my naked eyes.

But if it will bother you in person then that is another story. It is really personal preference and what really matters is that you will be happy with the diamond. :smile1:

Your ring is something that you are going to enjoy for a long time so it’s important that it looks good in your eyes. There really isn’t a “right” choice other than to choose what makes your heart sing. :)

My personal preference is to have a better color smaller diamond but I know plenty of ladies that love the warmer diamonds so it’s whatever makes you happy. Good luck deciding! I think the last pic with the matching band is really pretty. [emoji4]

I would get the G. I can see the yellow in the diamond when compared to your eternity and to me, that is not a good look.

A G color is the perfect price point for a white stone.

Also, what about an H? It’s still in the white range and better price point. An I color is a no for me.

Just my two cents.

Lots of people get rings for different reasons or with different attachment levels. Some people want the “best” they can get. Some people have no issue with upgrading and buy a ring with that intention in the future. For me, I told my husband that the ring he put on my finger to propose is the ring I want someone to take off my finger when I move on from this world. I have no interest in a new diamond and my diamond has sentimental value.

No way or view is any better or worse than the other. However, what YOU intend to do matters here. That being said, it seems to me that the I sings to you in a way the other ring does not. IF THAT IS THE CASE (aka do not buy it just because it is bigger) and you aren’t looking at upgrade value etc then I think you have found your diamond. I have to add, I know that light can make all the difference but I find the I much prettier in your pictures.

If this is a long term diamond love affair, go with what you love. Go with what will make you smile when you look at it.

Sorry these are all so huge. This is the Vatche U 113 with a Whiteflash ACA. It's a LOW color, but the cut makes it seem so white, at least to me! So if the I Tiffany has a 2 or lower on the HCA I would for sure go with that. I literally never notice any color in my diamond.
