good jewelry can enhance the wearer's beauty. i love both VCA and Hermes but im not a bagaholic. i have 4 Hermes bags and may one day get more but i feel like i have enough. (1 birkin, 1 kelly, 1 picotin, 1 evelyne) i think hermes offers wonderful value because its made so exceptionally well. i think the same of VCA though i do question the price of some stones.

Did you once post a picture of a floppy birkin and cdc’s in a closet or placed on the ground? My memory is failing me sorry lol apologies if I got it wrong

I feel the same about VCA stones. Ironically I have not purchased any stone VA pieces.. just YG and WG pieces because of value and durability

I own both H and VCA but am relatively new to VCA as I only started collecting once I was satisfied with my H collection. I think VCA jewelry will hold its value in the long term. Size, color, condition, type of leather and current trends can impact H prices, even B's and K's in pristine condition. At one point B35's were all the rage, now they're a dime a dozen on the secondary market because small bags are in. I've bought and sold several H bags including multiple K's, a B and other styles (bolides, plumes, victorias, Evelynes to name a few) and after the commission from the consignment place (would never sell on eBay), only my new Gris T Kelly with GHW sold for what I paid (after commission). I don't mind as I buy for enjoyment and only sell if something else catches my eye or if I find that I no longer use a particular item. In my non-expert opinion, I think that non-branded jewelry (other than gold) doesn't hold it's value, but high end jewelry brands (ex: VCA) are timeless and will hold value if kept a long time. When I say "long time", I'm thinking of when my daughter goes to sell the stuff she inherits from me!

buy what you love and will enjoy And reap your investment in cost per wear. Bags and jewelry are fun, not investments. I buy Stuff to wear, not for it’s resale value (And I prefer to give family members both bags, RTW and jewelry rather than consign. Both jewelry and bags will depreciate more than actual investments.
of course we are in the VCA subforum, but in the H subforum, there are many threads on the longevity and hardiness of vintage heritage leather :D

I think when the OP says value, she doesn’t mean investment in the truest sense, but what holds its value so she at least has the knowledge she isn’t completely throwing away 4-5 figures. I think it’s a fair question to ask, and while we all buy for enjoyment, the answer isn’t quite so easy.

having bought considerable VCA over the past two years, the immediate hit in resale potential is obvious as compared to Hermes. VCA doesn’t do markups as often and I think there may be more global demand for Hermes (ie more buyers). Depending what piece you buy from VCA, that can also affect resale value.

I think you have to be comfortable taking a 20-50% loss on the item. In the first few years of owning, you’re likely waiting for retail prices to increase. Thereafter, the item may show wear.

in this sense, I believe Hermes holds its value better. It’s harder to get a hold of so higher prices on resale market, more demand etc. But as a previous poster mentioned, better branded jewelry which has been doing amazing well on the secondhand market in the past decade than not.

So that’s it from a purely value perspective IMO. But since it’s NOT an investment all of the above needs to be balanced against what you’re solving for and your needs, be it enjoyment, gap in closet, etc

Just my 50 cents because I buy and sell a lot of jewellery.
I don't own any luxury bag precisely because of the maintenance issues. I live in Singapore where the climate is not very welcoming for this kind of items. It just gives me the creeps even to think about that. So I would never consider bag as an investment. Even in better climate - I think other ladies said enough and I can't agree more.

Jewellery is much easier to store and take care of. I agree with everyone's reasons including wearability, storage and enjoyment. This is my choice as well. I would also invest into rare valuable stones - they always increase their value over time.

My opinion about VCA: pieces like Alhambra do hold their value. The Alhambra line already has withstood the test of time, it's widely known and will continue to be known and recognised. Of course if you buy from the boutique, you can't sell the piece for the same price straight away (however, I've seen guilloche pieces sold at almost boutique price, just because they are so hard to get). Overall though the prices on VCA pieces drop only very slightly and it's very rare to see VCAs to be sold at half the price, and I do monitor second hand market all the time. Limited edition pieces, those which are no longer produced (lapis, coral, turquoise, chrysoprase etc) definitely are investments which can be sold at Christie's etc.

I typically source VCAs and sell them off but if I happen to come across a very good and interesting deal, I keep the item for my own possession. Most recent ones were limited edition 2014 pendant and 20 motif onyx in amazing condition (at half the price of the boutique). This will definitely not only maintain its value but increase it over time.

Hi OP, i'm in the same dilemma as you! I've just started looking at Hermes and what I can buy to build my profile but 1:1 seems like a lot to spend just to buy a bag, so my wishlist for next year is only VCA and some H sandals... Will have to see if I find an SA at H that I can click with and if there are other items I like other than the K and B bags....

Where are you residing? My wishlist next year is also mostly VCA but i would really love to get the Halzan25. I have no interest in the Bs or Ks, though they hold better value and of high demand. They are really getting quite common here.
