When I hear old lady I think just unfashionable, not anything to do with age. To me it's more about how you style yourself than what type of bag. I can't think of a single type of bag that wouldn't work with the right look. Hence why old fashioned bags look fine when the rest of the outfit is retro. The problem happens when people have made weird choices - hello kitty bag with a dark winter coat or sequins while wearing hiking boots or some crazy stuff like that that gives the impression that the person is a bit out of touch. That has nothing necessarily to do with age.
But I will say that for some reason the only time I see a huge mismatch of clothes and bag in the form of super utilitarian clothes with a super trendy bag is on older folks. I get the feeling some young person in the family gifted them the bag to bring them up to date but the wardrobe didn't come along. I never see young people mismatched in quite that way, but young people tend to play around with and pay more attention to looks, I suppose.
l don't care for vera bradley my grand daughter loves them she is 18 and my 85 yr old aunt has several. To each her own style. They look good onn both of them. That's an interesting take, and I really didn't think of it that way. You definitely have a point though. When most people use it, it's quite derogatory and negative.
Taste is so very relative, and this is just my opinion. But one bag I do consider "grandma bags" are Vera Bradley. On the right older woman, they can look kind of cute I guess (just not my thing.) But I see them on teenagers and think "huh?" They just don't seem to fit.

Like swags said, I think there's a generational thing going on as well. Women of "a certain age" did certain things, carried certain bags, etc. I think this ideal is fading and I am very glad for that.
Personally, I love frame bags, I love little handheld bags, and I'm currently lusting over a vintage crocodile bag that is all of the above. Those could be called "old lady" and I frankly could care less. It's my style.
I love doctors bag style and it is considered to be Old lady Style!I think that there is nothing new. All designs and shapes have been invented since the beginning of the history of bags. What is considered old fashioned today can become trendy again in ten years'time or even less.
Some trendy bags ( I won't mention any because I hate offending people) look like what some call old lady bags.
It's all a matter of marketing. What we don't like today may be worn by fashionistas in the future.....
