I am contemplating buying a secondhand Cartier watch, and the owner has offered to go to Cartier (on 5th Avenue in NYC) with me to have the watch authenticated in front of me before I buy it. She said they will do this, and that it might cost $100 for the authentication. (She said when she called the general Cartier number they did not mention a fee, but that the store on 5th Ave in NYC said there's a fee. She said they do it all the time for insurance purposes.)

Has anyone ever done this? Can one really just walk into Cartier and ask them to authenticate a watch? I don't have experience with high end watches really, only handbags, but I am imagining walking into Hermes and asking them to authenticate a Birkin and having them shoo me out of the store.:p

I have no reason to doubt this person, by the way... she's been very forthcoming, etc. But I also don't know her personally and therefore would not even be considering buying the watch from her if not for this offer of having it authenticated in front of me.

Yes, they will, and I know someone who went who they did not charge, they also went to the store on 5th Ave., good luck, I have my eye on a new little red box myself

When I bought my white gold Panther watch, I had an issue with the clasp. I went into the store and they looked at it. I would think if the craftsman found something wrong with it, they would not have serviced it... just an idea

Just an update...

I went to Cartier over the weekend with the seller, and Cartier was absolutely wonderful! The seller had called in advance and said she wanted to have her watch authenticated. When we got there, we went to the second floor, told the receptionist why we were there, waited for a few minutes, and then were called to a window. The watch was authenticated right on the spot for us (the gal at the window looked at it and said it was definitely authentic but then took it back to the technician to confirm, which he did) and they even polished it and gave us a little travel pouch for it since it had been brought in in the huge box.

I don't think they realized WHY we were having it authenticated, but they didn't ask. They were really nice, and didn't charge us, saying they did it as a courtesy for us.

I was really impressed with how nice they were, and I am thrilled to pieces with my "new" watch.:D

:yahoo: I'm glad everything worked out! any pics of your new watch?;)

That's good to know that Cartier agree to authenticate their watches as I am informed in tpf that they do not do that to their jewelry. That's why I am hesitated to buy a pre-owned love bangle.

I realize this thread is old but I want to share for anyone looking for this information that this is still true of Cartier. I went on a little HIS and HERS shopping spree for Cartier Roadster XL watches this week. I purchased both of them on eBay so I was naturally nervous about their authenticity. I found this thread yesterday, and I took both watches to Cartier today to see for myself. They couldn't have been nicer about it! I wish all brands were this helpful and understanding! Check out the new authentic goods ... the navy blue crocodile band I picked up at the store today for HIS watch.

Wow these are gorgeous! Thanks for posting this kind if info here:).

Hi again ladies, maybe i said something wrong idk, i purchased Cartier watch via bay from a reputable seller, but still wanted to make sure with Cartier itself. I called them just now to make appt, and they said they do not authenticate watches... I called 5th ave store. So, maybe i should've said something different??
