Michael Kors Why is the Michael Kors forum so quiet?

That is true. I think it has to at least be 5% leather for them to call it leather. The other 95% can be plastic and manmade materials. I once bought a bag (not MK) that said it was leather. When it arrived in the mail the entire bag was plastic except the charm that it came with was suede and they called it leather. Saffiano leather is PVC and leather, that is why it wipes off so easily. I knew a lady who took her MK bag to the leather repair shop and the guy told her that the bag was plastic and he couldn't do anything about it.
Hahaha

Michael Kors is still pretty commonly carried in my area. We have both a regular store and an outlet here as well. I went to the mall yesterday and MK had several customers while I had the Coach store all to myself. I fell in love with the MK Hamiltons when they were popular and had 3 of them at one point. I also had a Jetset Zip Top tote that was a great everyday bag and travel bag. I just sold it and a matching wallet this spring since I hadn’t carried it in ages. My mom has my last Hamilton. The leather on those bags was pretty good quality. Saffiano leather is a whole different story I guess, but it can take a beating, which is the point I think. I no longer own any Saffiano though. I can’t speak to the quality of their current bags. Every now and then I see something that I like the look of, but nothing that I’m tempted to buy over something from Coach or Tory Burch, for example. I think their declining popularity has to do with their lack of exclusivity (look at people who think luxury designer items from LV, Gucci, Chanel are too ubiquitous now) and prestige, and apparently inconsistent quality from what I’m reading in here. Some people care more about the label than the actual item, and others buy what they like regardless of the brand. I fall somewhere in the middle.

Agree with every word you wrote.

I think MK is the most common brand I saw while going through the airports. Some people may not like it if they think it's too common, but for people who aren't really into bags and just want name recognition, MK fits the bill. There have been quality issues but I agree some of the bags can really take a beating and still look relatively unscathed. Personally I don't own any MK bags but I'm open to buying one if I like the design. I see them more as practical bags so I might not come on here to post or gush about the bag even if I am getting good use out of it and enjoying it.

I totally agree! The average person isn’t as bag obsessed as we are so it’s not surprising that this forum is quieter.

Actually, Prada first came out with Saffiano Leather, all made in Italy. It has a top rating and no one said anything about it being part PVC? What they explained about the difference with Saffiano is how the leather is compressed and treated to have more structure. I have a feeling the repair man just wasn't familiar with saffiano leather. Many of the older folks have never even seen it.

Saffiano leather is made in different ways and I am sure MK Saffiano doesn't compare to Prada Saffiano. Sometimes they do use PVC in the process. If you go to the MK website MK is doing a lot of handbags in PVC you have to read the description. There is another post talking about leather and if it is important if it is not 100% leather. I posted the link below. I do prefer contemporary bags but I think MK bags were better in the past and now I am just not a fan.

That's very true, MK does make a lot of PVC handbags, of which many are the Jet Set totes, and when they use PVC, it says PVC right on the price tag. When they use saffiano or pebbled leather, it states that as well. I've always preferred their genuine leather over the saffiano as well and have never been a big fan of the saffiano. I've also notice their saffiano bags are often much cheaper in price compared to their genuine calf or cowhide, and much like yourself, I always suspected saffiano was cut with something, until I really looked into it and found it's really not cut with anything at all, it's the way it's treated and compressed, and then coated with a wax.
Here is an article explaining exactly how it's made and it clearly states it is a high grade full grain leather that is used and none of the research I did mentioned it was cut with anything, so my suspicions were wrong.

I own both a Prada Double Zip Saffiano Satchel and an MK Selma in the Saffiano, and note absolutely no difference in the quality of the saffiano, they are exactly the same, and did you know Prada is also Made in China now? lol! Coach calls it cross stitch , rather than saffiano.

Aspinal of london is brand that does saffiano in their way. If you go to Ilovedooneys website and look at their saffiano bags it says in their description that their saffiano is poly-vinly coated leather. The wax they use is the PVC. You can also get vegan saffiano bags. I am not surprised about Prada being made in China I kind of heard something about that a year ago.
