I've curated a fairly large wardrobe of clothes over the past 4 years or so. I hated my clothing and sat down and really gave some focus to my preferences and what I wanted from my clothing. And that grew into a wardrobe I love, that I add to periodically.
There are a few reasons for this.
1. I move around a lot. This means I'll live in some areas that are hot most of the year, or cold most of the year. Or, like now, a place that has all four seasons. So my wardrobe has a range that covers this. Its mostly made up of cotton, linen, wool and ramie.
2. I also change my color palette with the seasons. In Spring & Summer I wear a lot of beige, creams, dusty pastels or brighter colors. In Fall & Winter, warmer natural tones, blacks and charcoal.
3. I like to rotate out what I'm wearing year to year. So I may only pull out certain things each year for my wardrobe that season and save the other items to be "new" again in the following year. And nearly all pieces are able to be mixed & matched, so coords are nearly limitless year to year.
4. I've developed pretty specific tastes, I can't easily obtain the style & brands I like internationally and they are not readily available online, so I indulge while I have access to them. I can find similar things, but I would have to compromise on the quality or detail preferences and I'd rather just buy specifically what I want.
5. Its fun.
