Why do people love/buy Chanel, LV, Gucci, expensive bags?

Hmm, while I always think I should splurge on a special occasion bag, I realize the cost per wear is all wrong. I won’t spent more than about $150 on one of those. Though my collection is full at the moment.
I see your point about the price per wear, but sometimes it's like a unspoken dress code - I just don't feel comfortable using a contemporary bag when everyone else carries premium designer bags (and vice versa). Hopefully at some point I'll stop caring about these things and just carry whatever I like...

What I really mind about the bags from target or market is the inner lining. They often have lining that is detach from the bag itself. When u trying to find something, the lining just keep flopping around, making the interior looks really messy.

Next is the closure. The metal hardware from cheaper store often have peeling problem

Some of my reasons may be specific to where I'm from, ie down under.

I began appreciating quality items way before my colleagues/friends did, almost like art. it's just that most items turned out to be designer items.

I loveeeee the smell of premium leather (not the only reason to buy them of course lol)

I'm not big on jewels watches etc and dress very casual (as most do in Australia) due to our sunny warm weather. An expensive bag is a nice way to spice up any outfit.

I work in a corporate environment, it's "within my element" to carry designer bags and wear nice shoes, nothing out of ordinary.

I dislike wastage? Even if I sell a designer bag at a loss, at least the bag is rehomed and loved again and not contributing to landfill whereas a cheaper bag will be, mostly because it's already broken/ripped.

In my country after sale service and repair for less expensive bags is pretty much non-existent and the exchange/refund policy of most stores is very limiting. Eg I can get my lv items easily repaired exchanged or refunded with no questions asked. Contra my mother once bought a furla wallet, the zipper broke after one use and the store can only provide credit note instead of refund, that's just unacceptable imo. (I have no idea how they can get away with that and if it had been a more expensive item I would've spent more time complaining!)

There's lesser choices of nice leather bags and contemporary designers usually have a higher markup and usually take a while to go on sale (which I'm just too impatient to wait and even if I did my preferred color/style would be gone by sale). Eg it no longer make sense to get a coach for $1000s aud when you can get a couple hundreds and get lv, with the latter having so much better resell value. (Coach is declining popularity here)

The preloved market is small and usually with a high premium due to our high labour/storefront cost in Sydney, so I'd rather visit the store and get them brand new with warranty.
I like your post=) I am based down under too and after Coach started marking their bag prices above 1K, I switched to the more premium brands as they are about the same price and the aftersale care is much better.
I must add too, that Coach quality has significantly declined and as such, I no longer buy their products. Their vintage pieces (pre-1998) have been superb, esp those made with their signature pebble leathers and I still have a bag from then which still looks new. The newer bags these days are made with much cheaper and thinner leathers which start showing signs of ageing only couple months after they walk out the retail store:(

1. I hate clutter and waste. For that reason, I choose what I purchase very carefully, and do not buy a bag unless it is something that I absolutely love and I see myself really enjoying owning it, and it is the best one I can afford. A classic premium designer bag is so versatile, it goes with many different looks. It also instantly 'upgrades' a look even if I wear relatively inexpensive clothes.

2. It feels good to carry one because I am treating myself to the luxury. Every time I feel the material or work the hardware, the solid quality makes it a pleasure. In that sense, it is a gift that keeps on giving.

3. I would be lying if I said that I do not enjoy the admiring remarks I hear about my bag. It is just so beautiful, an artwork. Even I make a double take on my own bag once in a while. I know, I am a lunatic when it comes to a handbag :)

I get what you are saying. Even if there are not many special occasions, when they do come round you want to wear something you love and will feel good carrying.

Thank you, been hiatus and just saw your post. Ive been a fan of coach bags but don’t have any anymore.
I’m their target market and it’s a say to say this but im predicting that coach will exit the Australian market. they’re priced too high here and it just doesn’t make sense to buy them given all the other designers.

You really think so? Why are they priced so high here, I just don't understand..??? Last I checked, some of their bags have now become more than 1k but on the US website, they're only around 350-450 USD[emoji30][emoji30]

I am not really “brand-conscious” and all my life all I ever wanted was a Balenciaga bag (and a Stam bag). But now I like Gucci Soho Disco. Thinking if I should bite the bullet, as I have read some reviews that say after a year of so it looks very used.

Have you seen it in person? I considered buying it but it doesn't look terribly substantial (and not like a $1,000 bag), so I skipped it. Lots of people love it though and lots of designers have now come out with their own camera bag.

I agree, they look very pretty from afar, but you notice the poor craftsmanship when you handle them.

I have the Gucci Disco - two actually, in black and red. Quality-wise, it is definitely not on par with the Loewe, Celine or Chanel bags in my collection. Leather is less luxe and the canvas lining is not great (one of the inside seams of my red Disco’s lining started coming apart after about a year of use). But I like the design (the other design with one tassel) and it is lightweight and is surprisingly roomy. It’s a great travel bag, fuss-free and easy to dress up or down.

Bottom line I'd say if you aren't excited about buying a designer bag, definitely don't. To whom would you need to "justify" spending the money? It's your money. Why waste it on something that doesn't thrill you just because it thrills someone else. Spend your dollars on a great meal, a wonderful vacation, a new investment or even a bunch of new socks.

People of social creatures and we want to belong to a tribe. Even within tfp, we have different tribes/forums. Some only want to be in one tribe while others are in several. All have their own reasons why their tribe is the best. All are valid because in the end, handbags makes us happy and that's all it matter.

Sometimes its nice to have something special that is the best of the best. If you have worked hard and have the money or you have someone who loves you a lot and wants to treat you then why not...
People seem to like to spend their spare money on different things... for some it's the nicest house they can afford, for others it's a flash car, or a holiday, some people will want to spend money on a special experience. Some people buy horses or a show dog or a fancy cat. Some people want everything, some people want nothing.
Me I like nice handbags. They are fun.
