Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

Well, I have a fake bag. Only one. It is a Balenciaga Le Dix that my mother gave me after she got bored with it. She purchased it as real (from a reputable retailer) and only after she gave it to me and I took it to Balenciaga to get something repaired was it discovered to be fake.

However, the quality is amazing, and I love the bag, so I still use it, even though I now know it's fake. I wish it didn't have the logo in it to assuage my morality on the issue, but I'm not going to leave a high quality, lovely bag in the closet forever just because it has a designer nameplate stitched in it.

That said, I don't buy fake. I just have this one that fell into my lap.

The one thing that crakes me up is how u r girls saying "i'm proud to own designer bag" wtf??? Why does it make u proud???? Proud of what???? Owning a piece of leather, stitched together with price tag of $xxxxx?
I own a very few bags (mostly bbags) usually people doesnt even know what am i wearing, it doesnt make me proud! Especially the amount of money i spent on them (saving, saving, selling and saving) is nothing to be proud of.
Im wearing them cos i love the leather, the color, shape.. I'm not proud to wear my bags, that wasnt the purpose i got them, i simply enjoy wearing them!

Ps. Excuse my english.

Well, aga...now you'll be educated enough to not wear or buy any more fake bags because of all the connotations attached with the concept of ownership. Stick with this Forum and we will continue to educate the uninformed about the horrors of counterfeiting.

I know exactly how you feel. My husband unintentionally gave me a fake Bbag a while back. Like most men he knows little about handbags and bought the item as real. It broke my heart to take action over the bag as it was a lovely item and given to me as a gift. Just a few months ago I bought an authentic Twiggy that was discounted at TK Maxx. I stashed it away until Christmas then let him present it to me as a Christmas present. Although I have bought other authentic bags since that City discovery I still think about that fake Bbag. It was a beautiful bag, just not authentic, but given with the right intention.

yyyyyy..... where did i say i wear or buy fake bags?? i said i have very few bags and most of them are balenciagas - they are not very known and dont have logos all over them - so I dont own my bags to lift up my status, show off or make myself feel better... I just love the leather, shape, colors - I can go on and on abt them :) and the other thing is - I would never ever point at someone's fake bag. i often see fake chloe or lv but why would i do it? just to make myself feel better and embarrass the girl? pointless.. she knows and i know - thats it!

aga, you're a little combative :s
No one here says they point and stare, laugh at, walk up and ridicule, etc. . . people w/ fake bags. We're trying to have an adult conversation about why we agree or disagree w/ what the counterfeit trade represents.

Proud of choosing right over wrong
Proud to have not taken the easy way out and put the $ into the pocket of a thief to save some $.

Please try and be nicer.

aga didnt say she was buying or wearing fake bags... confused

Ok...I have an example...

The other day I was with my BF and his family and I brought my LV and my BF's sister said, "where can I get a fake LV?"

Now here are the circumstances: she is a single mother with a 2 year old, working three jobs, paying daycare, paying rent, paying bills, has an old car...

now, how can she ever afford an LV? She asked how much my galliera cost and when I told her she said, "wow, that's almost a year of my rent!"

but she loves the monogram pattern so much and would like one...of course she can NOT afford a real thing right now...she would LOVE a real one, but can settle for a fake

of course, I will try to buy her a REAL pouchette for Christmas, something small but usable...but how can I judge? because I'm blessed?

So I can understand her wanting one and understand how a fake could be her only option at this point...why is she wrong for that?

my heart goes out to her and actually makes ME feel GUILTY for affording such luxury when she is struggling to provide for her and her child

I guess it comes looking at things through a collector's eyes.
If you're a coin collector, you don't buy a fake coin.
Very few people probably actually see your collection.
Most non-collectors wouldn't know if it was fake or real.

But, you know it's real.
There is not much fun in pulling out your collection of fake stuff.
The pride comes in knowing you have something rare and valuable.
Something you worked for months or even years to find.

There is a certain satisfaction in it.

Something you gotta feel for yourself I guess.
It's like trying to describe what an orange tastes like.

see, i still don't get this. why does she want a FAKE LV, as opposed to a regular "inspired-by" bag (that is of better quality) from Macy's or JcPenney? to portray an image that she has a lot of money?? WHY? i don't get this. and i don't see how a fake is "only option". i see bags that are very similr to LV monogram (i.e. the XOXO kind which has Xs and Os instead of LVs). i actually have a bag that was a gift from my BIL and it is a Hello Kitty "Speedy" that has HK's on it (no LV), and it's actually of decent quality (it's Sanrio), and it's very similar to a monogram canvas speedy, yet it's not a fake.

more than 20 years ago, when i was a toddler, my parents came to the US from a poor country. upon first arrival they barely knew English, were struggling to find jobs and were running thru their savings. my mom had to work in some warehouse that was practically like a sweatshop to make ends meet. we lived in a crappy apartment for years. during that time, my mom's main concern was keeping the heat on during the winter and putting food on the table. I am fairly sure that at the time, she couldn't give a rat's a$$ what kind of purse she carried around..her main concern was the welfare of her family.

See, this is what I will never understand. If you're truly struggling to make ends meet (like I was for most of my childhood + adult life) why do you care so much about what kind of bag you are carrying around?? Why do you want so much for others to see you carrying around a "Louis Vuitton", even though your car is barely running? I can understand the desire for a decent-quality handbag that looks nice, but like I said, fake bags are not that...they are very cheaply made and fall apart very easily.
