Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

I tend to think that people like to wear knockoffs because they don't want to spend the $$$ for the designer look but want it anyway. Lets be honest...a LOT of people can't tell the difference, so maybe they aren't fooling people like us, but they are fooling the unenlightened masses which is probably good enough for them anyway. Sucks that people do it, but I highly doubt the knockoffs will stop being produced completely when the demand for them is so great.

Agreed. And what about that awkward moment when that one person calls out a bag as fake when in fact...genuine.

To each their own, but I would never buy a fake bag or piece of jewelry. There is no joy for me in wearing a fake LV, pretending to carry the real deal. I have some precious items that I love, like some LV and Gucci bags and some Cartier jewelry, but I had to save up for all of these. If you cannot afford something that you really like, save up for it, or buy an alternative.

IMO, a lot of people buy fakes because they cannot afford to buy the real thing, and they want to try to fit in with a certain group of people or to try to impress people by making them think that they are wealthy. I'm pretty good at spotting fakes, especially Coach signature which seems to be the most popular knock-off where I live. I cringe when I see someone carrying one and I actually sometimes feel bad for the person carrying it

The funny thing is that they could often get the real thing for the price of a tacky fake if they would buy pre-loved bags like I do. Hubby and I are far from wealthy, and there is no way I could afford most designer bags otherwise without draining our savings. There's no shame in my Ebay game :coolio:

People carry fakes because they like the style of the bag and/or the designer. And believe it ir not there are wealthy people who purchase replicas. Some of the very ones you may be trying to keep up with or upstage. I couldn't care less if people carry fake bags. So what? Why does it bother anyone? Be happy with what you have and don't worry about what the next person has whether counterfeit or authentic.

I had this colleouge at university who thought she was buying her Louis Vuttion for a good price while they're actually fake. she didn't believe us when we revealed the harsh truth to her. Not all fake-bag carriers are aware of it !
But to buy a fake designer item and try to pass it as an authentic one is pathetic, and speaks volumes about you and how you handle certain things in your life. With today's variety of options anyone can dress well within their budget.

I don't think it's necessarily just a money issue. It's also an issue of where a person chooses to invest their emotional energy. Just judging by the fact that we are a group of people who are invested enough in handbags to be participating on this forum shows that, even if we don't all have the money to buy full-priced premier designer bags, we care enough about the industry and the products that buying a knockoff just doesn't seem right to us.

But most people in the world don't give designer purses the time of day and I think that's fine. I can certainly imagine someone buying something off the street just because they like it, or because it looked like something they've seen somewhere else—and they just don't care enough to worry about whether it is "real" or not.

I also don't think it's extremely disingenuous to be interested in handbags AND buy fakes... it just shows that you don't care that much. And there's nothing wrong with that. We all have to choose where to spend our emotional energy and it's just our luck that all of us chose expensive handbags.

I suppose people want to be viewed in the most positive light they can, we all want to be admired and revered even by strangers we pass in the streets. One of the ways we can do that is to show off our wealth or at least hint at it on what we wear and the designer handbag is the easiest way to do that. Carry an instantly recognisable bag and people will know you have the money to buy such a luxury item. This is probably why brands like LV with their distinctive patterns are the most counterfeited bags around. I always wonder why people who are buying the real products will go for bags that are common fakes.

I work for a high end department store in London and one thing that amused me during our training was we were told that when scouting out potential big spenders we should look at shoes not handbags. Handbags indicate some money but shoes are a truer sign of real wealth! And in my experience that has proven to be true on most occasions a lady with a pair of Alaïas will usually spend far more than one with a Chanel bag.

Most people aren't really trained to spot a fake, even after they physically have the bag with them.

Also, most people I know would never admit that they bought a fake. It hurts them to admit that:
a. They have been duped or
b. They knowing bought it because it was a good fake

This behavior puzzles me!

I agree, but that depends on the age group of your shoppers. A lot of young rich kids are chauffeured around, but they're still wearing denims.

That is so funny, but probably true about the shoes!

When I was in high school, I did buy two or more knocks off. I was young and naive (not to mention still depending on allowance from my parents) then thinking that those bags I bought are exactly the same from real one. The seller told me that they got it from the same factory of huge brand name like gucci, Lv and alike. Those bags did not last a month of use they always get ripped or zipper become busted. That is when I decided not get any fakes. I want to buy something I can treasure and can "genuinely" be proud off.

Personally, I don't have any against to a person who like to buy fake stuff. Its not my money they are spending so they can whatever they want.

For me buying designer items is never about showing how rich I am or how successful I am. I simply love well designed purses/shoes with good material and craftsmanship. Many people believe a $50 fake can look exactly the same as an authentic one. Trust me, they never look the same.
