Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

I have to say something about the sweatshop argument very briefly.

I hope fellow purse-lovers will use our passion for designer bags to gain a broader education of this type of thing. Many of our electronics, made and imported legally, are assembled in conditions that would violate almost all work requirements in the western world.

Other corporations include Gap, Firestone, H&M, Zara and many, many more, sometimes as a result of suppliers using labor sources that the parent companies didn't have any control over or likely weren't fully aware of.

And in some third-world countries, child labor is sometimes the only alternative to child homelessness, starvation, prostitution, and street life. Which, while still not ideal, makes child labor the better choice (as much as it pains me to say that). Insisting that if a child didn't work at all, then globally, they would all end up going to school, watching cartoons on the weekend, and preparing for college, is a very uneducated, privileged view of the situation.

It's a very very complex issue and not as simple as: "Don't buy a fake because it means a child will be sitting in a factory being abused." Labor abuse occurs to adults and teens (and sometimes children) in factories that are creating legal materials that you and I use daily. And child work is sometimes the best alternative available. "Slumdog Millionaire" was not pure fiction - many children actually live similar lives in third-world countries (I highly recommend reading up on the Cambodian Children's Fund and what they've done for the children and families there), and factory work at least means they'll be able to obtain food.

I think a lot of people here have big hearts and are very passionate about these things - and a lot of good could be done if we all educated ourselves and directed our passion in a productive and realistic way. Instead of attacking the purchasers of fakes, if we all donated one bag worth of funds (and invested the time spent researching one bag a year toward researching issues and speaking at local schools and groups) to well-rated charities (Charity Navigator is great for this) and we participated in local groups to end trafficking (which occurs locally in almost all big cities around the world), it would do a LOT more to improve the issue for the people actually injured by it (and those aren't the people who have to watch while others carry replicas :p).

^The point of my post was the buying fakes is less related to human rights violations than most here seem to believe. So we agree on that at least.

I also point out that it's happening in other countries, not just china. Feel free to review it.

Do you resale your bags as replicas openly?

Are you telling me that I am commiting a crime? I don`t think so :D
Buying a replica handbag or two or ten or hell, even over a hundred during a lifetime won`t get you punished in no way. The most that can happen, and that happens extremely rare, is having your handbag confiscated.
On the other hand, selling replicas is punished by law indeed, but who`s selling?! I`m just enjoying the market :)

Actually, in much of the world, buying and possessing a replica (even unknowingly, in some places) IS illegal. Most don't prosecute, but that doesn't change that buy buying, arguing for, and flaunting replica bags is illegal. Why do you think the websites and shops (even the ones with "mirror" replicas) are regularly raided and shut down?

In France, where IP is taken VERY seriously, carrying a fake LV will get your bag confiscated and you'll face stiff fines. I only wish they were as strict about it in the US.

I'll issue you a challenge: post an authentic bag and a "perfect" mirror replica in the "authenticate this" threads. If your replica is judged authentic by people who know their bags, I'll give you some credit. If they're not, you may realize that there are a LOT of people out there who can spot your fake and KNOW you're posing. As you own both, people won't know which is real and which is fake unless they can tell from the actual bag.

When I see people carrying a counterfeit item of any kind I always get this feeling that they are the kind of person who fatuously believes one can have their cake and eat it too. A free lunch so to speak?

Why do all of you put so much time, effort and passion into these threads that just go in circles???

First off, judging the type of person someone is based on the bag they carry is snobbery at its finest! It is absolutly moronic to think you know someones personality just because they carry a fake bag.

I always wonder why people get so upset when someone admits to buying fake bags. What does it matter to all of you? She wears what she likes. Maybe she doesn't think spending the kind of money some of us do on a bag is worth it..? To each his own. Legal or not. Does anyone get as upset at someone jaywalking? smoking weed..(I'm poitive some of you all smoke...), littering, not wearing a seatbelt? We all have choices to make in life and just because the choices are not yours doesn't mean the person is bad or evil for making them!

You are mistaken if you think you won't go without punishment when purchasing a fake. As this article points out.

as to the why,

here are several guesses lol

1. They don't know (prob. rare, "but"... :)

2. They don't think the cost of the authentic one is worth it

3. They can't afford it, but love the bag and the look, and so, carry a fake.

4. They can't afford it, but want the "status" of it, thereby getting a fake.

We can only surmise. There could be many reasons people wear fakes.

well i have one simple theory..
people who wear wht they wear for th sake of other people wont care n will wear fakes if they have to but if people wear brands 4 th own satisfaction wont even consider wearing a fake even if they cant afford the original!

Here's the deal, this website does NOT support the ILLEGAL counterfeit trade. Period. It's illegal for a reason and I'm positive people here that are so quick to support them wouldn't be happy if someone ripped off something they wrote, designed, built, etc. . . . spent years designing, producing, trademarking, etc. . .
Like I said, this website is vehemently against fakes.

I don't agree with any of this, like everyone else here I mix high and low brand pieces that's what fashion's all about- mixing and matching! Designer clothes aren't always the most comfortable either I find. I have a Blumarine t-shirt that I love but god is that thing itchy! And also how much someone makes doesn't say anything about the authenticity of their bags because people spend money on different things. And maybe some people don't feel like fixing up their house etc and would rather buy a bag, or instead of saving would rather spend (I know I do that lol) we're all different, there's no rule that says X has to come first with spending

It is ok if you wear designer bags and mix and match with unexpensive clothes. A different thing is wearing FAKE designer bags. THAT IS SOOOO TACKY
AND ILLEGAL
