I have cream colored Akoya, I wear them the most. I wouldn't wear white because it doesn't go with my complexion--but I think most versatile is white (rose) if you are cool toned and cream if you are warm toned.
I do have a string of Chinese freshwaters which are one strand white and one strand black--they go with a lot of things too.
You can get very nice inexpensive pearls nowadays--why not have white, black and golden? It wouldn't be unaffordable (not like when I was young and most people had faux pearls because cultured pearls were so very pricy. Girls used to save then for a pair of pearl stud earrings like they save for diamond studs now.)
