We all have to study different brands. I cannot pick Chanel, Gucci, YSL, Dior, Fendi, Zegna, Canali, Prada, Miu Miu and Tom Ford as they have been chosen by other students. I don't want to do LV either as its too common and I don't own anything from them. I need to pick TWO and write about how they become successful, any downfalls, recoveries. What makes them successful eg marketing, what products they sell, what materials they use, their relations, revenue etc.

Our tutor used Burberry as an example, so cannot use that either....

Westwood would be the most interesting to write about. I would pick that one. And read Ian Kelly's biography as research. Excellent book!

Jil Sander would also be a super interesting subject. She is one of the most influential designers alive. She has a fascinating take on fashion, fabrics... and such a sophisticated overarching aesthetic (the gardens of her Hamburg home for example are breathtaking). Then there is the whole story of when she sold to Prada and ended up leaving and loosing her own name, only to make yet another mark with her work at Uniqlo. And then the story of the brand itself after that... the whole story will tell a lot about what has happened in fashion in the last decades. I would be a great project.

Can you pick Lanvin? A lot of history as it's the oldest fashion house, another : Marni. Actually Miu Miu is not luxury as its the contemporary label of Prada, a cheaper line. Chloe is another Good one, and Martin Margiela.

I never heard of Lanvin before. Gonna check it. I try to pick brands I am knowledgeable about.

Regards to Miu Miu, their prices are just as high as Prada. Are you sure they are a cheaper line?

Ok, Chloe is nice. Lanvin too. I will take them into consideration.

What do you mean by Westwood being in a class of her own? I might pick her.

I don't know, I find it difficult to classify her in conventional boxes. I don't think most of what she does now is high end. But then she may turn out an incredible couture gown for someone to wear at a royal reception, or reedit classics for the World End's shop, or do some fusion art project... She is just such a fascinating woman, her career has taken so many turns... I think it would be perfectly legitimate to label her brand 'high end' so as to do the project on her.

I recommend Hermes as well. They have a rich history that you can definitely talk about.

However, if I were to only choose from that list, I'd pick Stella McCartney. I definitely think her label is luxury, at least her label's former parent company thinks so. Her environmental stance and transparency is quite invigorating in the designer fashion industry and definitely something you can expand on. Albeit her choice to use vegan leather can be an argument against her label being a luxury brand.

I would select Hermès as well - in fact, it is Hermès that I had in mind when I wrote my last post. They make/sell a huge variety of things - clothing, shoes, housewares, fine jewelry, sterling silver jewelry, leather and also enamel jewelry. They started as a saddle company and still make a whole line of saddles and equestrian goods. And of course those handbags - they make/sell handbags recognized around the world, but also many other under the radar bags. As someone else pointed out, they are the top of the luxury heap and they have a long history of which they are justifiably proud, so it should be relatively easy to find info about them.

Good luck deciding - and please let us know your final selection!!
And good luck on your project!!

Ok, I chose Hermes and Jil Sander.

Thanks everyone.
Good choice! But for Hermes, they don't pride themselves as a luxury brand. They pride themselves as artisans who make the best in class of everything. They are also not fashion designer but a lifestyle house, producing a large portion of objects around living spaces and stables.

I would pick Missoni as one of them. It's not a high end bag maker, but it does offer luxury apparel. Moreover, it's still a family business -- one that was marred by tragedy with the death of the heir in a plane crash -- and it has a unique history in its patented knitwear processes. IMO, it would make an interesting case study, more so than Stella McCartney, for example. If your focus is bags and not apparel, then none of those strike me as true luxury. Semi-luxury mostly.
