Hi All,

I need some help finding out which of the following brands are considered high end or luxury. Its part of my business assignment at uni where I need to pick some brands to study.

Missoni
Emporio Armani
John Richmond
Elizabetha Franchi
KENZO
Tory Burch
Alexander Wang
Jil Sander
MCQ
Rag and Bone
Vivienne Westwood
Stella McCartney

Thanks a lot, sorry if the list is too long.

Missoni
KENZO
Alexander Wang (maybe? - he's headed there anyway)
Jil Sander
Vivienne Westwood
you can also google them as see what the search returns in descriptions. Some are still luxury without being in the handbag market.

That's what I thought. There are many luxury brands that just don't sell ultra expensive handbags. There are many variations in opinions about which brands they are tough. Some people told me KENZO is not a luxury brand for example.

yes i had to double check - from Google below
" Kenzo is a French luxury fashion house founded in 1970 by Japanese designer Kenzo Takada. Kenzo Takada was born in Japan and moved to Paris in 1964 to start his fashion career. He then became known for using Asian and Japanese influenced style with the expert construction of European high fashion. Wikipedia
Founder: Kenzo Takada
Owner: LVMH
Headquarters: Paris, France

Curious - were you assigned these brands or are you looking for some luxury brands to research? I don't think of any of the brands on the list as luxury brands, but do think a few - may be considered designer brands. Some luxury brands are known primarily (at least to most people) for their handbags, even though they make and sell many different types of products. Others may be known primarily for their clothing, and may or may not make/sell handbags. Others may be solely or primarily handbag/leather companies.

If you are looking for company names, it would help to know a bit more about your project so that we can suggest names that may be applicable.

We all have to study different brands. I cannot pick Chanel, Gucci, YSL, Dior, Fendi, Zegna, Canali, Prada, Miu Miu and Tom Ford as they have been chosen by other students. I don't want to do LV either as its too common and I don't own anything from them. I need to pick TWO and write about how they become successful, any downfalls, recoveries. What makes them successful eg marketing, what products they sell, what materials they use, their relations, revenue etc.

Our tutor used Burberry as an example, so cannot use that either....

Can you pick Lanvin? A lot of history as it's the oldest fashion house, another : Marni. Actually Miu Miu is not luxury as its the contemporary label of Prada, a cheaper line. Chloe is another Good one, and Martin Margiela.

To me the only two obviously high end from that pool are Stella McCartney (even if she doesn't use leather), and Jil Sander (the definition of understated luxury with a price tag to match). Both brands are made in Italy.

Missoni makes some beautiful fabrics, no doubt, but their policy lately has focused on more affordable lines and their quality has gone down a notch overall. Still, one may want to argue they are high end too.

Alexander Wang's quality is very average, both in terms of fabrics and tailoring. Emporio Armani is the cheaper line of Armani. Same for MCQ (cheaper line of McQueen). Rag & Bone, Tory Burch, Richmond... are (upper-)mid range brands, certainly not luxury. Westwood is in a class of her own.

Westwood would be the most interesting to write about. I would pick that one. And read Ian Kelly's biography as research. Excellent book!

Jil Sander would also be a super interesting subject. She is one of the most influential designers alive. She has a fascinating take on fashion, fabrics... and such a sophisticated overarching aesthetic (the gardens of her Hamburg home for example are breathtaking). Then there is the whole story of when she sold to Prada and ended up leaving and loosing her own name, only to make yet another mark with her work at Uniqlo. And then the story of the brand itself after that... the whole story will tell a lot about what has happened in fashion in the last decades. I would be a great project.

What do you mean by Westwood being in a class of her own? I might pick her.
