My 20+ year old hair dryer is breaking down. On some days, it won’t turn on. I do not mind spending on an expensive hair dryer as long as it does the job. I have fine, sparse, straight, below shoulder-length hair and I like to add more volume to it without spending a lot of time blow drying. Also looking for something that doesn’t damage hair, produces silky, shiny bouncy hair. My hairstyle is usually straight with slight curls at the ends. Please advise which hair dryer is best for me- supersonic or airwrap? are those who have tried shark flexstyle?

Would highly appreciate your reply. Thank you!

I have both the airwrap and supersonic. The airwrap with the brush attachment is actually amazing at drying your hair smooth and straight. You can also use the round brush to get some decent volume. The supersonic would do the same job if you don’t mind using a separate brush. Obviously the airwrap also has the added curl attachments if you ever feel like adding waves. I own both purely because my two young daughters have long hair and between the three of us I get a lot of use out of both dryers.

So would you say that I get the airwrap for versatility? Since airwrap can add volume and curl hair as well if I’d like to? I would like yo buy one only to avoid clutter.

Yes, the airwrap is definitely more versatile. I'd only go for the supersonic if you are comfortable using a separate brush to blow dry and don't ever want to use the curl attachments on the airwrap.

Hi! I would post separately instead of highjacking this post, but it seems that this forum prefers for similar inquiries to be in the same thread, so I'll ask here.

My daughter and I have the same hair as the OP here and am considering the Dyson products. I love the idea of the curl-features in the Air Wrap but it doesn't seem to be good as just a blow dryer. From what I've read in the reviews, the blow dryer feature is more of a direct line spray of air rather than a general blowing of air. This would be good for straightening, but less so for volumizing. Can anyone who has the Air Wrap, tell me if it is good as a general blow dryer, or do I have to get the dryer separately?

To the OP, what did you end up getting and are you happy with it? Thanks!

Thanks!

I haven’t bought because I couldn’t decide.

I haven’t bought because I couldn’t decide.
You sound like me. I've had the same hairdryers for almost 2 decades because I can't decide on a new one. I use a regular dryer on myself or just let it air dry. I scrunch it after I towel dry it so that it will have a little bit of wave. I could use a diffuser for times when I need it to dry faster, but the one I bought didn't work so I returned it. On my daughter, I use a round-brush-dryer, but only after using a regular blowdryer to get most of the water out. So you can see why I would be torn between the dryer and the airwrap. I'm leaning towards the airwrap because my round-brush dryers are not working well at all and those are what I find most helpful. But I wonder if the dyson dryer would be that much faster that it would, over time, be worth the investment. Reviews are all over the place. People love it or hate it. Best thing ever or a total sham. Not much in between.

The Dyson website has a few videos of women with fine hair using the airwrap and they do start with wet hair and use the airwrap throughout. Maybe I'll just go with that.

Hopefully more folks will come on here with experience to share. :)

Both the Dyson Supersonic and Airwrap have several attachments so they do add clutter. The airwrap comes in a case so that helps. The airwrap also has a steep learning curve. However, it would offer you versatility with volume or sleek styles.

If you need a tool with a diffuser, I'd recommend the Shark Flexstyle. It costs a fraction of the Dyson Airwrap and has similiar attachments--paddle brush, round brush and the auto-wrap curlers, but it has a diffuser which the Dyson does not. The reviews I've seen say it's hotter and louder than the Dyson, but the autowrap curlers grip the hair better than the airwrap curlers of the Dyson. It can also be used as more of a hairdryer because of the diffuser and because the nozzle can be angled, but the Dyson is only straight. The Dyson's hairdryer attachment is very narrow/concentrated. It's recommended for drying the top of your head/scap and the attachments to style the ends with heat.

I'm not sure which round brush dryer you're using on your daughter, but these tools, whether it be the Shark Flexstyle or Dyson Airwarp recommend that hair be 75% dry before use for styling. They're hot air stylers as opposed to blow dryers. If you're looking for a hot air brush, I'd recommend the T3 airbrush duo which is currently on sale.

Wow! This is awesome! Thank you so much!!

We do usually air dry her hair to about 80% dry before using the round-brush dryer on my daughter. If we're in a hurry, we will blow dry it to the 80% level using a regular dryer, but the 2 I have are both ancient and just not working very well anymore. Same with the round-brush dryers. I have 2 and both are very old and not working like they used to. (Why on earth do I have two of each of these things? I can't even remember, that's how old they are - lol!)

For myself, I tend to air dry 100% as I'm trying to protect the waves I scrunch into them. Thus, the desire for a diffuser for myself. I bought one recently that had great reviews but it blew my hair all over the place and took just as long as my ancient dryers, so I'm not sure why it had the great reviews. Perhaps because the price was so low that most people who got it were just thrilled that it worked at all. Who knows. I already have a bunch of junk that doesn't work so I returned it.

I am so excited to hear about the Shark Flexstyle! I had no idea that anyone besides Dyson had the self-wrap curlers. That is a big reason I wanted the airwrap since it would pull the air in rather than blow it away like the round-brushes do. The regular dyson hair dryer is supposed to dry much faster than everyone else, which is why I wanted that one, but spending over a grand on two hair appliances right now just isn't something I want to do. But it sounds like the Shark Flexstyle does it all.

If you'll excuse me, I must run. I need to find myself a Flexstyle.

Thanks again!!

You're welcome! I hope it works out for you. There are quite a few reviews on YouTube with pros and cons for both. The only cons I've seen for the Shark is that it's slightly longer and heavier and definitely hotter and louder, which could be more damanging in the long run. In terms of result, they're pretty similiar.

Order is officially placed for the Shark Flexstyle! I got the version with the curlers, round brush, diffuser, and concentrator. I like that you can get just what you want, because we wouldn't use the other attachments.

The main difference at this point (besides price of course) seems to be that the newest version of the Dyson's curlers go in both directions without having to change the attachment. However, I watched one video where a woman used the Dyson Airwrap on one side of her hair and the Shark Flexstyle on the other side, and the Shark had much better suction. The curlers of the Shark did a much better job of picking up her hair and wrapping it around the curler.

After watching and reading a bunch of reviews, the reasons I chose the Shark Flexstyle are:
1. The price! Holy moly, that's a big price difference. Plus, right now, if you put in your email address on the Shark website you get a 10% off code, which is even better.
2. The better suction and ease of use on the curlers as shown in the video review described above. It would be nice if the direction of the curl could be changed without having to change the curler like the new Dyson can do, but that is not as important to me as the overall ease of use with how it takes up the hair to curl it. It is easier for me to change a curler than to struggle with every piece of hair going onto to curler.
3. The Shark Flexstyle is also a blow dryer while the Dyson is not. The Shark Flexstyle has a hair dryer mode that you can use plain or with a diffuser or a concentrator, as needs dictate. You use it from towel-dried hair all the way to finished. With the Dyson Airwap, you have to rough-dry your hair before using it so I would have to buy a separate blow dryer, which makes the price difference even greater. The fact that the Shark is a 2-in-1 device (dryer and styler), is highly attractive to me. I get the blow dryer, diffuser, round brush, and airwrap curler, all in one!

The only complaint I have is that the round brush attachment on the Shark is a little large. They should have a smaller round brush so that more curling can happen just with the brush. Since other reviewers made the same comment, I am hoping that they might come out with that in the future as something that can be bought separately. For now, if I really wanted to, I could always use the concentrator attachment and a separate small round brush, like a normal blow dry. Not an option with the Dyson.

I'll let you know how it works once it comes in. Wish me luck!

The Dyson Airwrap has a blow dryer attachment. Also, the Dyson Airwrap grabs hair very well when using the attachments. It has three different temperature settings and three different blowing speeds. The only thing it doesn't have is a diffuser. I've never had to use a different blow dryer before using the Airwrap. Also, it dries hair faster than other blow dryers. I get it done in half the time! Very helpful in the morning! Hope this helps!

Thanks! From what I was seeing on the reviews, the blow dryer attachment is for smoothing hair and while people liked it for that purpose, they complained that as a general blow dryer it was too narrow of an air stream. I'm glad you have found it works well for you though! I was very tempted by the Dyson to be sure! Since I've already ordered the Flexstyle, I'm hoping to love it!

I hadn't read about the blow dryer being too narrow, it's actually a very wide, large opening. Good luck with the Flexstyle! I'm sure you'll love it!

Just wondering if you received the Flexstyle and how it's working out for you?
