last summer there were several robberies during the day in our neighborhood. everyone was really upset about it and the police department held a neighborhood meeting for us. one of the things they told us was that a thief will go straight to the master bedroom for the valuables, looking in the closets, under the bed and in all the dresser drawers; lock boxes that could be removed and taken will be stolen. the suggestion was to put valuables in a place that is not in the master bedroom. i have my jewelry box with stuff i rarely wear tucked down into a hamper in our laundry room and covered up with a couple of towels so it just looks like a hamper full of towels. the stuff i rotate on a daily/weekly basis is tucked away in the back of lower kitchen cabinets where even when opened you can't see the jewelry. i get what i'm going to wear out the night before and lay it on my dresser so i don't have to dig around in the mornings.

Smart idea !!

Well our house just got burglarized today and they took my jewelry box. It was on the dresser in the master bedroom in plain view. They were brazen! It occurred at 9:30am amidst the alarm system blaring. Took two TVs. The things in that box were irreplaceable, valuable and sentimental. If I EVER get anything again I'm putting it in another room. Or just not even in the house & in a safety deposit box. I'm so distraught. I've learned a hard lesson.

Oh no, thats just terrible! I'm so sorry this happened to you!

I don't have a safe, but I know burglars go for bedrooms and bathrooms first.
The freezer trick is also well known. So I try to find other unusual places to keep my most valuable things, while keeping less valuable stuff in plain sight (inside my dresser)
