A bout with insomnia is prompting this post.

People always say, you can tell a lot by there person, by their handbag.

So what’s your handbag personality. Why do you make the choices you do?

Some archetypes:

  • Trendoid: you have to have the latest IT bag. First.
  • Label Conscious: you are driven by brand recognition, for bag aficionados and everyone else.
  • Luxury Seeker: only the best for you. The best material, the best craftsmanship.
  • Status-driven: your bag helps you showcase your current station in life (or the one you aspire to)
  • Practical: you have one or a handful of bags. Your choices are driven by practical needs, and value. You want a bag to last oeuvre since it will be your daily driver for years to come.
  • Special snowflake: you want to be the only person on your block (or on the planet) with you bag. Its a unique expression of you.

What am I missing? Which are you?

[I am a combo of status-driven and practical. I want a long lasting bag that gives off the *right* impression. :)]

I wonder where my bag would fit in, a Special snowflake or Practical or some other type?

I've been carrying this Loro Piana for eight months now, it's different, not pretty, unknown, and huge (but I love it ).

Hmmm.. I don't know if this type can be included in one of the categories you've listed.. but, what about a person who seeks to have a basic collection of only classic styles so that they can use them forever? (they never buy trend-pieces)

Great thread!

I guess if I own up and admit it, I'm a label-conscious, luxury seeker, and practical girl all in one. I own everything from Valentino to Dior to Tory Burch to Coach. Hard to pin me down!!!

Label conscious/ status seeker/ practical! I couldn't put myself in one category. While I have designer bags, I also have no name ones. I love bags that are unique and quirky :-)

definitely luxury seeker.
I have to have the "made in Italy" bags. I know luxury bags and practical bags can be made in other places, but I have this thing about "made in Italy."
I want luxury but I do not want logos. I have them strictly for my enjoyment. I prefer no one knows what my bag is.
I have a huge collection. Only two have a visible name plate (one Valentino and my Miu Miu). You can see the name imprinted somewhere on the other bags, but they are not visible unless you hold them up close and look.

So personal luxury seeker.

I would add something like "stylist" (someone who picks a bag to go with an outfit) and something like "structured" (someone who likes structured or business-like bags). You can probably think of better names. I am both of those.

Or from OP's list, I might be "Practical". Although I see that as prefering function over form, and I am all about form, preferably the smallest form I can get away with that still functions.

Luxury seeker - I love Italian, French and American craftsmanship. Prada (both the saffiano leather and the thick wonderful Prada nylon), Francisco Biasia, vintage exotic skins (and any high-end vintage), vintage coach with thick chewy leather, Frye, Bosca made in America or Italy. I will take an unrecognizable brand, pre-owned and/or vintage, that is deliciously high quailty, made in Italy.France.Spain.USA over a recognized high end brand made in China.

That being said, in some weird way, also a status seeker - just not quite in the way the OP describes. I find status in scoring something fab and authentic for pennies at a thrift store - not just the having but the seeking and knowing I've trained my eye and my touch to pick out the authentic stuff from the dross and the trash and the fakes. So far (knock on wood) I've never purchased a designer bag at a thrift that didn't authenticate.

I love a bag that is a piece of art or something I want to look at and makes my heart sing:D
My loubiposh Christian Louboutin baby pink "clutch" is a good example.

***special snowflake here****

I think practical and luxury-seeker go hand in hand. It's got to be A+ quality so it doesn't fall apart anytime soon. :D I'm practical in the sense that my bag needs to be able to go on my shoulder without falling off as well as light as a feather so I can carry it around all day.

But logos are a no-no for me. No one but me needs to know how much my bag costs.

I'm a practical luxury seeker. I like to make sure that each purse that I buy serves a specific purpose in my collection and is superb quality. I care about labels in that I know that, in general, the name brand is likely to be the better buy in the long run due to the quality of the materials and customer service associated with the brand (i.e. sending the bag to the "spa" for touch ups and repairs).

I'm not interested in "it" bags unless they happen to fit into my other criteria (see above). I try to stay about from things that will "date" the bag since I want to carry all of my bags for years to come.
