My impression is that trends kind of take off in the subforum because we're a community of like-minded people with a passion for a very specific market (jewelry).

I definitely get interested when I see someone post something positive and other people chime in with more good comments!

I found this forum through a google search for Tiffany's last week and have been browsing through so many different threads unrelated to my initial search! I'm definitely learning a lot from all the experts on here - thank you :)
And yes, this forum has triggered a lot of new wants!!
At the same time, it's helpful to see all the photos that every posts to get a better idea of how something might look on!!

A few months ago, the majority of threads have covered every aspect of Tiffany's. Now it's all about VCA. All of a sudden a brand turns into a must have and members jump the band wagon. I am curious, which brand will be the new "must have" a few months from now.

This forum has major influence on the opinions of many it seems, triggers cravings for brands. Did you ever wonder how many brand managers, marketing people etc. from those companies are amongst us?

My guess would be hardly any, if at all, since we, the community evoke those "needs" for certain brands by ourselves. One person starts and posts a few photos, another person "likes", a few follow and soon everything here is about the one brand.

Too sad, the German community is rather small here, I would love to read more on WEMPE. :-)
Or the Italian community for Pomellato.

:smile1:

I have to agree. I read the earlier threads of VCA, and boy, there was one marketing person in there all right. Hey, it worked! VCA is one of most busiest tPF threads. Prior to tPF, I never heard of VCA. And I have a boutique 15 minutes down from where I live. Sure, I've seen VCA pieces on Mariah Carey, but never thought non-celebs purchased these until I saw the thread.

If I could share one thing to my fellow tPFers, it's "buy what you can afford." Celebrities usually get their jewelry for free or the pieces are borrowed (with the exception of engagement rings of course. It would be funny if that was borrowed.). Sometimes jewelry companies would lend their pieces with the understanding that the celebs would be photographed with them wearing it. Then regular folks go out to buy these with their hard earned cash.

Unless you really have money to burn, save your money for a rainy day. It's pretty sad when people make $100K (prob. $40K after taxes), and buy a 20-piece VCA motif for $20K that same year. All their hard work went to VCA's top line revenue.

Next big must have thing? Probably still VCA. People are hooked. :p I can't blame them, their pieces are very pretty and VCA hunts down the replicas to ensure that they remain profitable.

I think trends are circular consumer patterns that are inevitable. Many of the brands we discuss are already known and the collections have been available for a while.

for exmaple Tiffany threads are all over the place during Christmas and holiday times, ever notice that?

I don't know if people necessarily catch on to a trend and follow or perhaps they already showed interest and researched it online and stumbled across TPF? I have seen this happen to myself a few times when I have googled a certain designer or item. my specific time was when I was interested in the Pomellato Veleno ring, the pomellato thread was inactive for a while and buried pages back- but once it was brought to the top of the page people started discussing pomellato and posting pictures of new Nudo rings etc...

TPF has never tempted me with bags- I find these are something I need to try on in person feel the weight, check out the pockets etc...but jewellery I have been tempted!

I think the one and only piece I can blame on TPF is my yellow diamond ring! when I saw Khol mascaras ring I knew I had to have a yellow diamond :D before seeing her ring I thought it would be unattainable or coloured diamonds were just not for me, I can easily replace the temptation with gemstones...but no! the yellow diamond trend was definitely like wildfire here on TPF!!

regarding marketing reps for various designers or companies- yes they are definitely here- and probably gather information, but I don't think they post about their brands. I work for a Swiss watch company (small one but known within the watch community) and I have never posted the brand I work for or posted a picture of my watch in any of the watch threads, work is work and I like being part of this community "socially" if you know what I mean:giggles:

Kohl mascara did some great yellow diamond marketing for Tiffany. But she does have a very pretty physic. I think if she wore anything, people would like to have it. She's like a tPF celeb (if there is such a thing) because she is just so darn pretty...from the face all the way down to her fingers! :smile1:

But to Tiffany's credit though, yellow diamonds used to be sold in large carat sizes - making it very expensive to purchase. For them to mass produce an 'affordable' yellow diamond collection is a milestone in the brand name jewelry world IMO.

I will blame tPF if the DH buys me a yellow diamond for xmas.

i'm not influenced by what everyone else is getting.

i like tiffany on my own accord, not cause it was popular.

i rarely look at any other jewelry other than pandora.

i have no desire for cartier what so ever.

Good to know one of us isn't tempted by all the gorgeous jewellery around here :D I'm certainly tempted!

well don't get me wrong! i appreciate the beauty of all the jewelry revealed. i check almost every single thread out. they look great on other people but i personally wouldnt want to own any of it. most of it isn't me. which is why you don't see me comment too much in the jewelery forum.

i'm just picky :p
