What year did canvas quality change?

I purchased my speedy in 2012, and it does not seem to have the same quality as my sisters older speedy. I actually made the comment to one SA when I first checked one out. You could tell she KNEW. I have a vertical batignolles made 2007 and the straps seem to be much heavier than the horizontal I just purchased made the same year. I'm a tad concerned. They are a recommended my poupette seller, but you would think the same year, it would be the same. Plus this one has a horrible musty smell. Still deciding if I'm keeping it.

Sorry folks, but this is nonsense. I have been buying LV since the 1980’s and have seen zero difference in canvas thickness or quality. The canvas on my 1998 Speedy is exactly the same—perfect—as was the Montsouris I beat the you-know-what out of for 15+ years and my Alma from 2016 which is stiff and structured and flawless.

If you get a singular product from a boutique with some defect (and consider some reports unknowingly come from reviews of fakes) then return it. But I have owned a lot of authentic LV, and I am extremely picky, and I have seen no difference in canvas.

I have to wonder if some of this comes from bots or a few people with some personal beef against LV.

90s & 2000s up to 2014 are the best! The oldest I have had several bags were made in 90s, OMG you just will not believe how these bags hold up, they are well used yet no crack no tear no strange quality issues now the newer ones have!

And the older canvas definitely are thicker, since I have the opportunity have had bags made in every year since early 90s to current, the older bags are consistant, the newer bag are very inconsistent, some newer bags' canvas feel like paper thin

I have a lot of vintage pieces and the older ones are very solid. A quick comparison of my PAs and the older one (2003 Mono) is definitely thicker than the newer (2007 DA).
My oldest Mono piece (Alma PM 1995) is definitely the thickest of my collection.

They use different thickness in canvas depending on the style from what I have read and been told. With that being said, I do prefer the thickness to my pochette accessories over the very thin canvas of my multi pochette. I am not sure why one would be thicker than the other when they are similar styles if you go by it is different depending on style theory.

Yes, exactly. There is no singlular "today's canvas".
Most probably 30-40 years ago Vuitton used a single type of canvas for everything. But since they always want to innovative, as technology and money made it available, they engineered different types, thicknesses, finishes. Even the Monogram pattern itself have changed a little lately, but most of you haven't even noticed. These are small steps, optimizations, fine tuning of the products. (Not to mention that these are very difficult to follow for the counterfeit industry.) Again, there is no single "today's canvas". There are dozens and dozens. I have 2 Keepalls from 2014. The Monogram canvas is soft and slouchy, the Damier Cobalt is stiff and can stand on its own. Same year, but they are different intentionally. The old sleeve type iPhone cases (for the iPhone 4) had a canvas almost 3 mm thick, while a Speedy from that year was just as soft as thin as today.
And while the canvas might be thinner than before on some pieces (again, optimization), it doesn't mean worse quality. They sell 1000x more bags now than 40 years ago, so even though we see quite a few complaints here, the ratio of bad/good pieces in general most probably haven't went up at all, if not the opposite.

I feel that canvas is thinner noe. My speedy 30 2011 is thicker than my 25 b from 2018. But also my victorine wallet mono fuchsia I have a few years feels thicker than my new azur victorine 2021

I think this an easy way out of this topic by saying that perhaps they are reflecting on a counterfeit Lv bag. I would have much more accepted a response stating that perhaps we are comparing bags that have been used and by that by thst affecti the condition of the canvas. I’ve seen new models in bad condition simply excuse the bag was not taken care of properly. I’ve seen brand new bags with cracked canvas. Hardware faded. I’ve seen older bag in excellent shape, pristine. So it could jus the wear and tear.
