What is the one thing you look for in a handbag other than brand, design & material?

Staying power is important because I don't want chase friends. I wan to love my bag as long as possible.

BUT! If I tire of it I want to be able to recoup funds for another purchase. So resale value is critical.

This is my main criteria. Like my clothes, I want bags that are timeless-- that live beyond a season. Then again, it's all subjective. It really is about what you like. Now whenever I purchase a bag, I do keep that in mind. My tastes have changed drastically in the past 20+ years, so I shy away from bags I know I'll only have a fleeting love affair with.

I don't care about trendiness or resale value. If I like it, I buy it. Don't care if anyone thinks that it's old and looks dated. Besides, most of my bags are second hand so by the time that I'm over it, I've gotten my money's worth.

Outside of the design and quality, the most important to me is secure closure. On most bags, this means a top zipper. I'm willing to consider other forms of closure as long as it really is 100% secure and there is no way anything is coming in and out of the bag. I won't pay for a bag that snaps closed in the middle no matter how much I love the design. I’m very concerned about someone going into the bag and taking something from it so security is a must.

I don’t care about trendy vs classic because if I buy a bag, I buy it because I like it. I will wear it and use it regardless if it’s “in” or not. Resale value also doesn’t mean anything to me because I only buy bags I intend on keeping. I don’t resell.

And, of course, I want it to be something I am completely in love with and that makes me excited. Not something I just bought to have a new bag.
