What, In Your Opinion, Makes a Bag Look Outdated?

maybe to a forum member, one of the very advertised it bags of the past would look outdated, like the miu miu coffer (I loved that bag) Or the MJ Stam, but to the average person, almost any well designed bag that is part of a well thought outfit or style, would be fine. i I don’t mind mixing and matching older things to current trends. Some things are classic and fashion is cyclical. Although I’m old enough where shopping my own closet might be considered vintage in and of itself.

Hear, hear. I've worn many of my favorites for years without feeling out of style. While they may not be completely on trend, I've never felt that they were irrelevant, either.

Of course, I could just be kidding myself. But I like them, so who cares?

I am considering buying an older coach bag from the 2000s that I love the look of. It has multiple pockets on the outside .. which might make it look dated. I agree with a lot of your opinions. Fashion trends are cyclic so I say if you love the bag it doesn't matter! Y2k trend seem popular last year and this year..

If this is about assessing one's own collection, outdated means I just don't like it anymore, so it's the emotional/psychological response more so than any physical properties. Out in the world it's not something I expend energy on. If it's clean and authentic (my most basic requirements), I say rock whatever you like.

For me, I think that anything that doesn’t fit with your style or aesthetic will look dated. I saw a woman at the mall this weekend carrying a Chloe Silverado. She had on bootcut jeans, a blazer, and a plain white button down. She looked amazing, and I never thought that she looked dated. I thought that she looked really cool.

‘Maybe my perspective is different for me because I take trends with a grain of salt.
Worn out bags look outdated to me. Anything in great condition can look good depending on what you wear with it. Dirty Vachetta looks dated to me.

Both of these points make a lot of sense to me. I can't pinpoint any specific thing, but I think a lot of it has to do with the entire look. If a bag is worn and tired and dirty, and it's paired with an outfit that's similarly sloppy, it won't matter if it's a Birkin; it will look....out of fashion and a bit outdated, I think. Conversely, if a Chloe paddington, say, or a luggage tote has been well-kept, and is paired with an outfit into which it's well integrated, it can still be a flex in my opinion.

I feel like there's always an odd moment with fashion trends, sometime after a trend hits peak saturation within the market, where it begins to look to "turn" so to speak, and look outdated. I think we're living in that moment with the Gucci marmont line (even though those bags are still great, and I like them a lot!) right now, and I can kind of foresee it happening with the Senreve bags soon as well. So I guess, for me, it's about timing. At some point in a lot of bags' lives, there will be lull when it's too saturated on the market and its look gets bypassed for something new.

Another factor, related to trends, I think, is what exactly is the thing that's on trend. RN, it seems like small, structured, top handle and multi-wearable bags are hot hot hot, so something the complete opposite of that, like a big slouchy hobo bag, looks outdated in comparison.

I don't pay attention to trends, if I like something I will buy it. Unless your job is in fashion, I don't think anyone really cares if you're carrying a bag from a decade ago

Funny enough, if someone's job is in fashion (unless they're young and just starting out) they tend to stick to what suits them in terms with personal style.

I think anything that takes itself to too far extremes runs the risk of looking dated. That said, I think it's fine so long as the outfit doesn't scream a particular era (at least until it comes back in style). The BV Cassette is one that I don't see lasting with how extreme the hardware and quilting is, but will still look smart in five years so long as it's styled with a classic outfit. Wearing it with other 2021 trend pieces in 2026 will make it seem passé though.
