Unless he has really good taste or knows exactly what you like, you must be there to help make the decision. My husband supprised me with my ring, but I was not excited at all about the setting (the diamond was very nice, but the setting not so much). I didn't express my disappointment at the time, but after 10 years of marriage, I asked if he would mind if I got a new setting and he said yes. He wasnt hurt at all. But I spent 10 years of my 23 years of marriage (so far) being disappointed with my wedding ring. So get what you want and don't worry what anyone says.
 
I agree with everyone. There is no right or wrong way to doing something and what matters is between the two people involved. ;) We decided that we wanted to choose the ring together and he would do the official proposal (which I'm leaving it up to him and know nothing about what he's going to do). Thanks for the great feedbacks!
 
I think its cute when couples shop for rings together. The woman is the one who wears it so I think that if she wants a part of picking it out...she should have that opportunity.

I dont think it would make the engagement any less special, it would just bulid the anticipation :)
