What do you do with fine jewelry pieces you rarely wear?

Some stones appreciate far more than money does!
I love gemstones, but I buy them for my personal enjoyment. I consider gemstones (and fine jewelry) as an expense, not an investment.

For me, I do not include gemstones as part of my investment portfolio. The gemstone market is fickle and growth is a crap shot, even for the finest stones (e.g. Burma ruby, Colombian emerald).

I buy them for myself too.

I keep an inventory of all of my jewellery, and some of my pieces of High Jewellery can be upgraded in the future, some are investment stones, some I wear, some I’ll pass to my Niece.
It’s not taking physical space, and it’s appreciating in value, so I don’t feel pressured to sell anything, and have regretted selling some stones in the

I haven’t seen anything do better than Nvidia for example 😂

Thankfully no High Jewellery changes-(except for a new Argyle diamond ring)-but an unusual May-thankfully nearly over..

I lost a sterling silver diamond watch whilst having a blood test, had 2 diamond watches which needed repairs- one sterling silver and one white gold, decided against the repairs and sold them, and bought something towards my dear Niece’s 21st birthday.

She is the daughter I never had, as well a sister, friend, I adore her(as I adored my late Aunt), luckily it’s mutual , I would not gift her anything I wear, or investment stones , but on every birthday I know that she is very sentimental and does not sell what I gift her.

I have a few Tiffany sterling silver pendants that I don't wear, and a DBTY wg necklace I received for my undergrad graduation. All gifts. I keep them - couldn't imagine selling. Too sentimental. I'm sure one day I'll dig them up to wear again, but since I transitioned to all yg several years ago, I just don't go for my silver/wg items. I feel guilty for keeping them stored up without use, but such is life.

Latest update: I sold a few pieces of jewelry 😁. In some sense I feel relieved. I have a lot of pieces and I often felt like I was rummaging through the jewelry box. Now there’s less and it just feels better. Again thanks for your input.
where did you end up selling them to? i got quotes from fashionphile and luxedujour and all very ridiculously low :0

I sent them to a reputable British auction house, not sure I should say the name but it starts with a C 😁.
I don’t know exactly what I’ll get (considering they take an additional cut) but the estimates were fair. The thing is all the pieces I sold I purchased over 10 years ago and the estimates though below current prices were above the price I paid back then so I haven’t “lost” any money. Feels a bit like I enjoyed them for years at 0 cost.

I wouldn’t sell recently purchased pieces because as you said it would probably be ridiculously low.

I haven’t seen anyone mention repurposing, which is my go-to when I fall out of love with a piece of jewellery! It takes very little tbh to refresh a piece and make you love it again. Or, sometimes you just combine 4-5 pieces of jewellery into something completely new and fall in love with something that was otherwise languishing in your closet. I would never do this with brand-name jewellery, but with unbranded jewellery, it’s the best way. Of course, that would require having access to a jeweller who is reasonably priced and who will agree to remake your own jewellery.

Small changes I’ve made in the past that have made me fall in love with jewellery otherwise languishing in my closet:
- rhodium plated a YG ring to make it look like WG
- convert a pair of small studs into a toi et moi pinky ring
- convert a pair of extra watch-links into cufflinks
- turn a pearl bracelet into a tin-cup super long pearl necklace
- turn a brooch into a hair clip

I believe @880 reworks pieces of jewellery.

I have a pair of GIA blue diamond platinum stud earrings, which I’ve had designs drawn up for to create more elaborate earrings.

Ditto my DIF platinum studs as I bought a larger pair of studs rather than upgrading those..

Also an old cut remount..

I would keep them. My mom had a lot of fine jewelry that I inherited. I threw a lot of it out because I didn't wear it often. I wish I had kept it. I would keep your pieces. I feel like just because something isn't used everyday or is a seasonal piece doesn't mean it should be thrown out. However, I am not a minimalist. We only have so many days here and a pair of earrings sitting in a box is not going to stop me from living. I just can't wrap my mind around living vary minimally...but that is just. I would rather look at some sparkly earrings than an empty room or wall.
