My best experience was Chanel in Hamburg last summer. I just walked in on a weekday and the store was practically empty. The SAs were really nice young girls and we talked for quite some time and I bought a pair of shoes. It was so relaxed, my "home store" is so stressful in comparison. Since covid there's usually a line at the door and you have to wait for a SA to become available for you. Even with restricting people the store is usually pretty full, very stressful altogether.

I have shopped at Chanel for over ten years. During this time a couple of my jobs included travel, so I was able to sneak out and see several Chanel boutiques in various cities. I also LOVE New York so have visited numerous Chanel boutiques while visiting the city. I have only had a couple of mildly disappointing experiences. Maybe as I am older, i truly do not let it bother me. I am writing however to say how many wonderful experiences I have had. I am a little bit of a nut for holiday wrapping. I have been known to visit New York during Christmas season, and when I have explained how much the holiday wrapping means to me, they always go above and beyond. However the best experience was during a visit to the 57th Avenue boutique. An older associate just took a liking to me and after I had picked out a few things, I think a necklace and earrings, she insisted I follow her upstairs. They had just gotten in the “little black jacket”. She had me try on a sleeveless dress with the matching black jacket. I believe this was in December of 2010? I have felt so fortunate to have this set. She was not a hard sell type of associate, just explained it was “classic chanel”. I am sure she could have sold it to ten other people, but she was so kind. It was my very first Chanel RTW. I have added a few other pieces over the years, but I will always love this set. I may be wrong, but I had the feeling she had been with Chanel for many many years the way she carried herself and the other associates treated her. It was a wonderful experience.

This is an interesting and slightly horrific thread to read.
Firstly I really really object to the premise that one has to be 'expensively' or 'smartly' dressed to go shopping-In my previous job I was a Stylist for several A list people and editorials in that role I would shop globally (across the US, Japan and France mainly).
I have never felt the need THEN....when carrying company CC's and spending tens of thousands
Or NOW-spending my own hard earned money...to dress a certain way to get good service, in fact some of the wealthiest people I know just wear very low key clothes whilst shopping and often because they go most places by car dont even carry a handbag but keep their CC's in their pocket.
If I encounter rude or judgemental service in a shop it doesn't matter how much I want the item I won't buy it on principle because it brings back that unpleasant interaction or experience.
I must confess that the rudest service I've encountered was in Paris at Rue Cambon during Fashion week when I was attending the shows-I got it in my head that I wanted to buy a Chanel bag (I confess I'm not a fan of Chanel bags as a rule having only previously owned a Chanel 'bum bag' in the 80's and now a vintage tote thats very low key no logos that I brought at auction).
I dont recall the name of the bag but its the hugely oversized lambskin classic flap with large CC -so big it looks like a cartoon bag
I wanted it because I liked the jokey oversized feeling of it as I'm not a classic gal.
to cut a long story short I was ignored by the SA, while they rushed up to and helped tourist groups, I walked round and round and when I finally virtually grabbed someone to help me they were so disinterested I almost felt like they were putting themselves out by even letting me try the bag on-I was wearing Japanese designer clothes and I just got the feeling that they thought I wasn't their client demographic because of what I was wearing (As I said I'm not usually a Chanel gal but I do wear designer clothes just more avant garde or Celine) I had the money for the bag-went in intending to buy it but the whole feeling I got just put me off the whole idea and actually put me off the bag too as once I had it on the leather looked plasticy compared to my go-to brand at that time which was for bags Celine.
It was not a luxury or pleasurable experience.
I do not want to feel they are 'doing me a favour' by serving me.
However I've had lovely experiences and interactions with Chanel staff in the London Stores.

I'm relatively new to shopping in-store and went in after work several times (so not glamorously dressed) to a stand-alone boutique. Every time they only show me what's in the tray or the cabinets behind the displays even if I'm more specific to what I'd like to see (and it's not necessarily some crazy hard to find item). I really have no idea if this is normal and they only have the items that are up front or if they just aren't going to look for other things they might have in stock. What's the expectation/normal?
You know what? Just keep going until you find the right SA who won’t make you feel judged. Buying lux things should be a positive experience!! As for me, I guess I got lucky that she showed me that particular piece “from the back”, but it’s only a cardholder. I also asked to see the CCH or the square mini flap, she said all sold out.. so *shrugs*. As with all things, if you want something bad enough, don’t give up. As read from some others here, kind SAs do exist! :hugs:

I knew these girls who were rich-rich came from millionaire families and owned boats (a proper one that has rooms inside). When I went shopping with her, she'd see an item she liked, pick it up and quickly put it down after seeing a logo on it. A lot of rich people actually low key despise logo and branded things. People who constantly flex designer brands (to the point where it's tacky) are wannabe rich anyways.

My current awful experience at a Chanel boutique is seeing my new bag packed in a cheap plain black box due to Chanel’s box shortage issue. Unacceptable.

Brands under LVMH that sell more products than Chanel have secured their box production during a pandemic so there’s no excuse for Chanel to run out of boxes. Chanel should have ordered their boxes way earlier or should have looked for a different company that could produce boxes for them much faster.

Not a bad experience but just a general question. I just went to two different stand alone boutiques. They are doing the temperature check but one location had what looks like a face or body scan. . They are asking if you recently traveled out of the country within the last 14 days. Suppose you answer yes? I'm a local resident but supposed if I was a tourist visiting in the area? I'm sure local management different policy guidelines will vary from one store to another.

I won’t shop without a referral (sometimes multiple cross referenced ones from the retail and customer side). I’ve learned that a referral works only when the person making it knows both parties well. My criteria are that SAs are knowledgeable about the brand but also relaxed and low key and easy to deal with. I had the same chanel SA for many years beginning in 1998 until she left to manage fendi. (I also often follow SAs bc they know what you like and what you already own. I was referred to my current Chanel SA by Brunello SA, where DH and I both shop a lot. Since both SAs know each other well, and since I have a substantial purchase history in both boutiques, there is nothing to prove and everyone can relax. I shop RTW, where no one cares if I wear sweatpants into the store. (I’d rather be comfortable when I’m trying multiple items at once). If a referral doesn’t work out it’s usually a personality or taste issue, ans I know immediately. There’s no harm in getting another one.

I do understand that some TPfers like boxes ans packaging, but I’d rather not take any for myself. mainly for reasons of sustainability and bc I have too many dust bags, hangers, suit bags, other bags, boxes) at home. IMO if a boutique runs out of boxes, it’s not within the SAs control. It’s an issue with corporate ordering, and with covid, there are supply and distribution issues. Chanel is happy to pack my RTW in my Whole Foods bag, but my request to take a purse without it’s box and other accompaniments seemed to confuse. I am sure that an SA would be more than happy to provide a keepsake box bc they’re trained to package everything as if it were a gift.

Hi! I had the same experience too recently, hopefully your SA would be gracious to give you a keepsake gift box once they have more boxes in.

Best: 31 Rue Cambon. I contacted an SA via whatsapp a few weeks before arriving to Paris. I knew exactly what I wanted. It was the last 19C Barbie pink CF M available in the whole of France. He said he couldn't hold for a month. Understandably. But, told me to send him a message 2 days before arriving into France. I sent him my flight itinerary. He had the bag on hold for me and although he was not working the day of my arrival into the store, another SA that we were linked to upon arrival, was nothing but amazing. She was obv French, but from a different country in Northern Africa. She WAS the best SA. So fashionable, straightforward without sounding pushy or hurried us. We were there for 2 hours looking at bags. She even allowed us to pay upfront minus the VAT, which was amazing. We left with 5 bags between the three of us. She even told us all the crazy stories of the ultra rich coming in and buying their entire staff J12 watches! IT was such a great expereince.

Worst: Hirshleifer. An SA guaranteed the first position to me on a very recent popular bag. I paid upfront the entire amount. She even sent me pictures of the bag from the stock room and asked I not share with anyone. Since she was not supposed to do that. I said ok. One day before the launch of this collection, she sends me an abrupt message saying the bag was canceled, avoided my phone calls and so when I called the store, the lady on the phone told me that I must have been ill informed and theirs no way I was in line for the bag. Then why charge my card? Anyways, I think they sold it to an uber VIP client, since it was the only bag in stock and not on order, and lied to me about it being defected. I ultimately found the bag through a reseller, for only $400 more than retail. But, I would never shop there again.

Really wanted a specific pair of sunglasses that were past season by about 2 seconds, unbeknownst to me. Nowhere had them anymore except the Rodeo Dr store in Bev Hills, the most annoying place to shop. The store was a complete zoo (holiday times) with people buying or pretending to buy more significant things than sunglasses. The the SA spent a minute and found their only pair aside from the floor model. It had some kind of minor sticky stuff or glue on it from the tag and she spent a long, long time attempting to clean it. Eventually she told me no, these aren't good enough, you cannot buy them. I'm not picky and was like nah it's fine, I'll take them, floor model is okay too, not a problem. Just wanted to get on with my day. She insisted that I cannot buy them and suggested trying another shop in the area (no luck.)

Still not sure if best or worst experience.
