What All Goes Into the Price of a Polish?

have always felt that some of these big cosmetic companies outprice
their polishes... some of the other less expensive brands are just nail perfect...

I've worn NP as far back as I can remember and though I can't find it now, the 97 cent Love My Nails seriously was better (as far as application, no chipping, less tip wear, etc.) than most of the $$$ NP. I've said that multiple times and was scoffed at. LOL! I do love the luxurious feel of Chanel NP, but honestly, it wears worse on me than some of the cheaper ones. But for those unique colors (like Peridot, for example) I'm willing to pay the price. Between Opi Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous and Chanel Graphite, though - I actually like the OPI better. But I had to get both to know for sure...and to be certain they were actually dupes.

I imagine it would be hard to get a NP business up and running because the temptation to recover costs more quickly would certainly tempt you to charge $15 and up...by the time you add in the manufacturing charges, the bottle and brush suppliers and all of the other charges, it's not cheap if you're starting small. You'd pretty much have to build in a few years of no profits until you could get the volume up unless you charged $25/bottle. And that's not EVEN if you did holos.

My opinion and my opinion only, but I don't think too much R&D goes in Chanel or Dior polishes. Nothing compared to their skincare lines. For nail polish companies like OPI and Essie I believe a lot goes into their formula and colors but they aren't associated with a fashion house or cosmetics company so they don't get ridiculously expensive. If you wanted to start your own polish company you can get supplies online or you can get a polish manufacturing company to make the polish for you and bottle and custom label it.

Of course we always associate higher price with higher quality, but that isn't always the case. For instance, yesterday I bought a Sinful Colors polish on sale for 99 cents. It's gorgeous, the formula was easy to work with and was a one coater. As of now, my nails still look perfect. Even at regular price of $1.99 that's cheap. And I'm pretty sure I've seen it mentioned that Sinful Colors are 5-free.

So how can they be so cheap? :shrugs:

I think you are paying mostly for the marketing. The supermodel, the high priced photographer and on location shot in Monaco, the Vogue ad, the product placement in a department store instead of a Walgreens/CVS, the swag at Cannes, the fancy bottle and box, etc.

don't think that Chanel, YSL, Dior and other upscale polishes are 5 free either..

yes, the consumer pays for the fancy box, advertisement & all the other bells

& whistles.. have found other polishes just as good without the expensive price tag...

You are definitely paying for brand names... Chanel, Dior

and if they advertise.. like OPI is in every People magazine.. you are paying for part of that.

There are definitely dupes. I had heard that alot of the companies..are using the same labs to create the polish.. and after the lab perfects the color... they sell it to someone else.

I have been to AVON headquarters and saw them making Nail Polish. All they were doing was pouring polish into bottles from.. vats of polish they bought from a different company.

This happens with all different products.. not just nail polish.

I think it was Cult Nails? who talked about sending her stuff to a lab, having them create it and sometimes it's as if you haven't trademarked that combination of items so others can use it? I forget the terminology, I think I found it on one of her earlier blog posts/entries.

Yes, advertising is a huge cost for all that fancy schmancy stuff!
