Wearing Black tights with cocktail dress

I think black tights go with almost everything in the fall and winter.

As for nude hosiery, both Kate and Pippa Middleton have been wearing them, and sales have gone up. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy wears them, too. And then there's Beyonce. Of course, this may have more to do with first-lady or royal unspoken fashion rules, but it goes without saying that many women's legs simply look better with hosiery than without. In the summertime hosiery is just plain hot and is usually avoided unless one's professional dress code requires it, but many women wear them in the fall and winter. Of course, if one chooses to wear nude hosiery, it ought to be as close to one's skin tone as possible (no "suntan" colored hose) and it is an absolute faux pas with sandals. Otherwise, few people will really notice if you are wearing them at all.

i understand the whole: pantyhose are thin nylon but tights are thicker... but i don't understand why people say pantyhose are so uncomfortable but tights aren't? uhm... they really are pretty much the same except one is thinner the other thicker???

i do love all the new patterns on tights this season!

pantyhose don't stay up and in place as well as tights do generally. I feel like you have to constantly pull and tug with pantyhose (although I haven't worn a pair in 20 years or so) while tights are pretty low maintenance.

^ Except the tights from 20 years ago sagged and bagged, too. But most legwear (sheer or opaque) now contains lycra to keep its shape and to keep it from sagging or bagging or falling down.

Black tights/pantyhose are perfectly acceptable for a black tie event to go with a short cocktail length dress.

The look you are going for will dictate the opacity of the nylons/lycra, though I too would stay away from any nude hosiery for a black tie event. :flowers:

If the tights are opaque, I prefer them with more of a "fashion" inspired or more casual dress for evening (like the picture a couple pages back with the red chiffon dress and leather jacket. And then, maybe do a cute ankle bootie or platform pump.
But if it's a sleek, elegant cocktail outfit, I'd do no hose.

Okay, so glad I asked you guys! :-)
The tights I want to wear are thick black tights so not in the least bit see-thru :smile1:
Is that you in your avatar?

Black lace pantyhose - with a plain black cocktail dress? Possibly - to give an edgy look?

My understanding of the whole tights/pantyhose debate is pantyhose is generally sheer and tights are thick colored opaques.....and stockings need a suspender:D

I agree with Haute Mama's post; I think 'pantyhose' is a very stylish classic look and worn with the right outfit can be chic - ala Kate Middleton - the pantyhose texture and colors have improved heaps and heaps from years ago, are no longer talking about the suntan colored 60 denier nurse type worn with loafers.....

for me, pantyhose are itchy. i like how tights are a bit thicker and softer/smoother feeling.
